A Waking Nightmare

Countless nights,
Spent twisting and turning,
Unable to rest.
My eyes wide in the darkness,
Each flutter of my eyelids,
Forming a silent, urgent plea.

I feel my heart,
Pounding in an uneasy rhythm,
Nightmares fill my waking hours,
Afraid to move,
Unable to sleep,
Dreaming with my eyes wide open.

Frustration,
This confusion is killing me,
I can’t read between the lines,
My heart aches and my head spins.

And so here I lay,
Awake and dreaming,
Of a morning that will never come,
In this night that never ends.
