an argument essay i had written for my GCSE coursework.
Argument Essay-Why Prostitution Should Be Legalised
Imagine: a young girl of no more than twenty years of age, walking the cold, ominous streets at night. Her face is pallid and her eyes weary and jaded. Her arms are bruised and raw from a cocktail of dirty needles. She has no money and she needs her next fix soon. This girl sells her body illegally to fund her desperate drug habit. This is why she turned to prostitution…

It is now high time that prostitution should be legalised, because surely it is obvious that prostitution as it stands now, is far more dangerous than legalising it.
So many innocent victims are killed every year by cruel men who have no respect for the women. This relentless and savage intent can date back to when Jack the Ripper was prowling the cobbled streets of London in the 1900’s, preying on helpless, young women; and can also be brought forward to the 21st century, when the acclaimed ‘Yorkshire Ripper’ roamed the boulevard for his next defenceless and powerless victim.
Still, some people are convinced that these ladies bring all the trouble on themselves. The majority who think this are extremely jaundiced: the women do not go out intending to be brutally and heartlessly slaughtered, they go out to make a living!
Yet I do agree, to some extent, that prostitutes have a bad reputation as a minority of them are associated with the drug underworld, and some of them only use the money they make to get their next ‘hit’. But why is there such a surge of hatred towards this profession? After all, the women are not harming anyone.

Furthermore, it seems clear to me that if prostitution was legalised everywhere, it would be made obligatory for the ladies to take a full health check and regular drug screenings. This could enable the government to enforce a worker’s permit to ensure the women could do their job in accordance with the law.
I also propose firmly, that if workers do not produce a license for working, then it will be regarded as a criminal offence. This also means that, as it is a real profession, the women will have to contribute to the government by paying tax and national insurance, which is only reasonable as the rest of the working world have to supply also. It seems clear to me also, that many prostitutes could be claiming benefits from the tax payers’ money when they are already making a reasonable income. I firmly believe that if prostitution is regarded as legal, tax payers would be paying less towards people who genuinely do not need money and that the women would no longer be eligible to betterment from the authority.
It is my firm conviction that if this governmental action is implemented, this situation would be ameliorated.

It is often averred that the job of prostitution is not respectable, dignified or morally correct. Then again, I feel the need to fulminate against this statement, and say that if prostitution was lawfully approved, then the workers would be treated with decency, respect and reverence.
As aforementioned, if they worked and made their money in a safe, secure and self-assured environment, they would be recognised as real workers who generate an income and pay taxes like everyone else.
In addition, the ‘fallen women’ wouldn’t be targeted by pompous and narcissistic masses who only see the façade of the state of affairs. These narrow-minded individuals believe that the job is disgraceful and shameful, but they do not look at the actual detail. This inequitable judgement has been around for many years. I believe whole-heartedly that if this vocation is made legal then the ‘ladies of the oldest profession’ could continue in their line of work with discretion and dignity.

To make this occupation work in accordance with the law, I strongly advise that the ‘promiscuous females’ are given a safe and comfortable environment to carry out their job in. I also believe that if they are given such a place like, then there would be a lower death rate of prostitutes as they are not working on a dangerous and unknown street.
I would also like to suggest, that to make the job completely free from harm, security precautions would be taken extremely seriously. This would mean protection of all the ladies by security guards. Clients would be searched before entering the building for drugs, weapons and alcohol. Also, pseudonyms would be used for the females to guarantee that the work being done is private.
I am fully aware that there are many people who would argue against this, the idea of giving these women ‘an opportunity’ to carry out their job, as they would protest against the thought of having some sort of ‘house of ill repute’ right in their neighbourhood. This is a biased remark as people are critical about their area’s reputation and eminence if a ‘den of vice’ is brought to town.

At this minute prostitution is extremely deceptive. If prostitution was legalised, the world in full would be a better place. This is due to there being fewer deaths (of these women). In the United States, 124 women per year are killed through the work of prostitution and the death toll is still increasing. This however, may seem like a small number as the population of the USA is 309,550,000 (as of 21st July 2010) which is huge in comparison to the 124 deaths per year. These numbers nonetheless do add up.

It is now high time that prostitution should be legalised.

Imagine: a young girl of no more than twenty years of age. Her face is glowing and her eyes sparkling and bright. Her arms still bear the faded scars from her traumatising past but she’s no longer trapped in a whirlwind of self-destruction. She now sells her body legally and makes her money in a safe and clean environment. If only prostitution was legalised…

After all … prostitution is revolution.
