IN GRANDMA'S BELLY Word Count: 257 Last Edit: 09-09-13 Author's Note: This story is meant for a picture book. “Wake up, little Velma. Wake up,” Velma’s grandma sang. Velma sprang out of bed and scampered to the family room. She leapt onto her grandma’s lap and put her head on Grandma’s tummy. Grandma opened a box of animal crackers and popped one into her mouth. Velma heard a loud noise coming from Grandma's stomach. “Grandma, I hear an elephant in your belly.” “Really, Sweetie? What do you hear?” “I hear a thundering elephant. It sounds like it’s blowing a horn,” Velma answered. Velma listened carefully as her grandma ate another animal cracker. “Grandma, I hear a bear in your belly.” “Really, Sweetie? What do you hear?” “I hear a grumbly bear. It sounds like it’s growling,” Velma said. Grandma placed two more animal crackers in her mouth. Velma enjoyed the game they were playing. “Grandma, I hear a lion in your belly,” “Really, Sweetie? What do you hear?” “I hear a roaring lion. It sounds like it’s snarling,” Velma answered. Grandma put a handful of animal crackers in her mouth. Velma listened closely. Velma couldn’t hear anything. No thundering elephant. No grumbly bear. No roaring lion. Nothing. “Grandma, I can’t hear anything in your belly.” “That’s because my tummy is full. I’m not hungry anymore, Sweetie.” “Now we can’t play the game anymore,” Velma said. “It was fun picturing animals in your belly.” “We can play again tomorrow morning,” Grandma said. “That’s a great idea,” Velma hollered bouncing off the couch. A loud noise came from Velma’s tummy. Velma and Grandma smiled from ear to ear. |
