“it’s okay Charlie. Forget about him”. Jacobi tried to tell me. I was so upset. “I can’t! I don’t know what I did wrong! I keep trying to play back the last three months in my head and I’m not sure on what I did wrong. Yea, I got a little jealous, but I apologized for that!” I texted. I’m sure glad he wasn’t here. I would hate to cry in front of Jacobi. I do kind of feel bad, though. Ever since Rhett broke up with me I have been crying myself to sleep every night and complaining and whining to Jacobi. I don’t want to seem annoying but he’s the only person that I ever want to talk to now. My phone vibrated, I looked at the message from Jacobi surprised at what I had read. ‘You know what Charlie? You need to get over him! I’m sick and tired of you whining and complaining about some idiot breaking up with you when there are people who have it way worse but don’t say a word. There are people who are homeless and hungry, but yet you don’t see them whining to everyone else about it! He’s a complete jackass for hurting you, but it’s his loss! You have done nothing wrong! Charlie, you’re an amazing person and you always make other people happy. don’t let him screw that up for you! So quit your whining, and forget about him.’ I had not the slightest idea of what to say to that. I expected something heartfelt. Not anger. I thought about it for a moment. He’s right. I shouldn’t be upset because of Rhett. I promised myself I would never get that upset over a boy a long time ago. I replied to the message with a simple, “thanks”. “You’re welcome. You okay?” he asked me. “Yes, a lot better. Thanks, I needed a slap in the face.” I said. After talking to him for awhile I asked if we could hang sometime because I haven’t really seen him since 8th grade and it was now the middle of our sophomore year in high school. “yea that’d be fun. You wana just come over Friday? Jason will be over too and we were going to play some video games.” he said. “sounds great! I’ll see you then?” I asked. “yea!” he replied. I wanted to go, but there was a part of me that didn’t want to leave the small corner that I have been crying in. I knew I had to get out, though, and I’m glad that I would get to hang out with Jacobi. I’ve missed him now that I start to think about it. I’m glad that he’s been here for me. He always made me feel a little better whenever we talked. He always tried to avoid talking about Rhett no matter what. And I greatly appreciated that from him. It was finally Friday, after what seemed like months of waiting, it was the weekend. But not just any weekend. This was the day that I finally got to hang out with Jacobi! I was so excited! I couldn’t help but to run out of the building when the bell finally rang. I rushed home and hopped in the shower. All I could think about was going to Jacobi’s house. I guess I was just excited because I haven’t seen him in so long. I wasn’t sure, but I was sure that I wanted to look cute but also comfortable. So, I blow dried and straightened my hair and put on a little eye liner and mascara. For myself, I just wore a cute sweat outfit because I honestly wasn’t trying to impress anyone. As soon as I was about to tell my mom about going to Jacobi’s, it hit me. I can’t believe that I had forgotten something so important! It was my dads birthday today! I felt so ashamed, but I really needed to get out of the house since I haven’t done that since Rhett broke my heart. Just thinking about it made me hold back tears! I found my mom and asked her if I could leave later on tonight. Since dad was having a bunch of family and friends over for a party tonight, he shouldn’t notice my absence. After spending a few minutes trying to persuade my mom to let me leave, she gave me the okay. I was so excited! I text messaged Jacobi to let him know that I can still come over, it’s just that it may be a little later than planned. “alright” he said, “cant wait”. I kept text messaging Jacobi and I also waited for pop to start turning up the music real loud because that would be when I could make my escape. I knew once the music got turned up that he would have a few beers in him. I know it doesn’t seem right, but I’m afraid that if I don’t get out of the house now then I won’t want to get out. After what seemed like forever, my mom finally gave me the ok to leave. I was so excited! I finally got to see him after about two years! I sent Jacobi a message letting him know that I was on my way. I was happy that I found out that he only lives about five minutes away and it only takes three turns to get to his house. As soon as I rang the doorbell Jacobi opened the door. “hey!” I practically yelled. “well hey there!” he replied. He out stretched his arms and wrapped them around me. I had to stand on my toes to hug him back. I walked in his house and was greeted by five dogs. “Oh my gosh!” I yelled. “What?” he asked. “They are so cute! You have five dogs? I’m so jealous of you!” Him and Jason both laughed at me. “Hey Jason!” I said. “haha hey Charlie” he replied. “Wow,“ “What?“ they asked me. “I feel extremely short compared to you guys!“ I laughed. “That’s because you are short, Charlie!“ they mocked. We walked to Jacobi’s room to hang out. Jason and I sat on the bed and Jacobi sat on a roller chair. We all talked for awhile and then the boys wanted to play their video games so we went into the living room. They sat down on the couch and I sat down on the floor in front of them. As soon as I sat down all of his dogs came up to me with wagging tales and friendly noses. “You can sit up here if you want.” Jacobi asked. “Yeah there’s plenty of room.” Jason added. “No, I’m fine! I want to sit on the floor with the puppies!” I said with a smile. The guys started playing a game that only needed one player so they alternated the controller. It looked like fun so I asked if I could give it a try. They said ok and handed me the controller. After failing terribly at it and everyone getting a good laugh, I handed back the controller. “Maybe video games just aren’t my thing.” They both laughed and replied, “no but it sure is fun to watch you try.” “You guys! Y’all are just jealous because I could so totally kick y’alls butts! I’m just pretending to be terrible so I don’t embarrass you boys. You’re welcome.” I told them. We all laughed and they rolled their eyes at me and shook their heads. We talked for a few hours but when it was going on midnight, Jacobi’s mom said that it was probably time for me to go since it was getting late and she didn’t want me to get in trouble by my parents. Even though I wasn’t ready to leave, I didn’t say anything against her because I knew that she was probably tired and it’s curfew anyways. So the guys showed me to the doorway and they both gave me hugs good bye. “Are you going to Jourdon and Chandler’s birthday party tomorrow?” Jacobi asked. “Yeah, are you?” “yeah, so I guess that means that we get to hang out again tomorrow.” “yea!” I said excitedly. “I’m taking Dixie to the party, need a ride?” I asked anxiously. “Yeah, sure!” he said. I told him that I would call him when I would be on my way and he agreed. The next morning I was lucky enough to wake up bright and early to go and put up with rude people for the next eight hours. Oh, how exciting my life is. After the dreadful eight hour shift, I rushed home to get ready for the party. Except, I had no clue on what I was going to wear. I was going to go ahead and pick up Jacobi since he was already dressed and ready to go. So, I picked him up and brought him back to my house. When we got there, my older sister and my dad were in the living room. I introduced everyone and said that I was going to go change and will be right back. On my way up the stairs I hear my sister say to Jacobi, “you’re really cute! Are you and my sister dating?” I heard him laugh and say thanks and no to what she had asked. Dixie was on her way to my house already so I needed to find an outfit now. I wasn’t trying to impress anyone so I just put some jeans on and a hoodie. Dixie walked into my room and I look at her only to find that she got cute and dressed up. “Aw, man! You’re cute!” I said. She looked me up and down and just kind of stared. “Well, umm. You look…comfortable. That’s okay, comfortable can be cute.” she said sarcastically. “Oh great! I don’t know what I’m going to wear! Dixie! Help!” I shrieked. She loves dressing me so she went into my closet and picked out a black and white shirt/dress. It reminded me of another dress that I had that I thought was more cute. So I grabbed a fitted, dark charcoal gray dress with leggings and I borrowed my sisters uber cute charcoal boots. I put on the outfit and showed it to Dixie. “Wow! Now that’s sexy!” we both laughed. “I bet Jacobi will love it.” she said with a smile. I didn’t know what to say because if I agreed with her then she would think that I would like him, but I didn’t want to disagree because I hope he does like it. Maybe I am trying to impress someone. J after my sister yelling at us to hurry up, we finally ran downstairs. “You look cute.” Jacobi said. I blushed a little. “Thanks” I said with a smile. He returned the favor. We all hopped in my car. Jacobi sat in the back seat and Dixie in the front. It was quite an adventure trying to find the location of the party, but after a few extra minutes of searching, we finally arrived. At first I felt really over dressed for a sweet-16 party but as we got closer to the building I noticed other girls dressed up as well. I was pretty excited. I knew I was going to have fun. As soon as we walked in the building I couldn’t believe who I saw. For some reason I felt scared and embarrassed whenever I saw him. My eyes got wide and turned to Dixie. “Oh no!” I said, “he’s here!” “who?” “Rhett!” she looked behind me and saw him as well. “It’s okay Charlie, just ignore him. You’re here to have fun. don’t let your fun be ruined just because that thing is here.” I looked at her and smiled. Then I looked at Jacobi who was now across the room. He met my stare and smiled back. Dixie knew who I was smiling at and she just chuckled. So her and I walked around the room, from one clique to the next trying to socialize with other people. I mostly stuck with Jacobi and Dixie, though. As more people started to show up the lights started to go out and the strobe lights came on as did the loud music. It usually takes me awhile to actually dance at a dance. I’m usually shy about dancing in front of other people. Especially if Rhett was going to be here. Dixie could tell that I was starting to get nervous about him so she looked at me and said, “I bet he really wishes that he didn’t break up with you.” I looked at her with a sort of puzzled face for the randomness of the comment. “Charlie, do you realize how hot you look? Girl, I bet he is droolin’ just lookin’ at you. He’s been staring at you the whole night so far!” she said. “gee thanks Dixie, that doesn’t help knowing that he’s been staring at me all night!” I replied. “Jacobi’s been staring at you too, ya know.” I looked at her. She smiled and started laughing. Then she grabbed my hand and took me to where all the dancing was going on. We passed Jacobi on the way so I grabbed his hand as well. |
