On Unsteady Feet
A girl lies broken on the floor,
Her tears wash down her face,
She doesn't know what she's done wrong,
To be kept so trapped in this awful place.

The bruises brand her pale white skin,
The burden of his pain,
Her secret wounds her to the bone,
But to him it's just a game.

He offers her his outstretched hand,
But in a rotten act,
He tells her it will be alright,
But in order of her silent pact.

She bandages her old wounds,
The new wounds forming ugly art,
But she can only heal so much,
And there are no fixes for a broken heart.

In her head she sees his fists,
That caused her to be here,
And she watches herself from a vantage point,
Like living through a broken mirror.

She swallows all her deepest fears,
And crawls toward the door,
Then her devil lets out a roar of surprise,
And reaches out for more.

It's like the toughest game of chess,
And she's fighting for her life,
Her single player, her strong hope,
That becomes a brutal weapon, her deadly hidden knife.

She manages to stand,
On unsteady feet,
But her freedom is contagious,
And victory sears throughout her core.

She's made it out, she's safe at last,
And suddenly she knows,
Even though her old memories remain,
The window to memories is not yet closed.
