The story of two people, finding themselves by the help of one another. |
Every school year started and ended the same for her. She just had to get through this last year of elementary. It was going to be long and boring, or at least that's what she thought. The last days of summer passed quickly and the first day of fifth grade finally arrived. That day she arrived to school fifteen minutes before the bell rang. For some reason she didn't mind being early. She talked to some friends outside, laughing and smiling. Hearing about everyone's summers wasn't her favorite thing, but it occupied her until school began. Everyone walked into the school, of course she walked with her best friend Kassidy. Being the two had younger siblings, they walked in from another door, hallways away from the shared one between fourth and fifth. The two walked by the office and made it to the hallway they would be taught in. Kassidy walked ahead of Alexis, she didn't mind. She was too busy trying to cut her way through the crowd. A boy looked at her and smiled. She didn't notice and neither did Kass. Secretly that boy had a crush on her, and she would eventually mean the world to him. It was May 15th, and the fifth grade class was riding home from a field trip. The weather was warm and muggy. Alexis sat next to a friend named Leah. Across the aisle sat the boy and his friend. Leah knew both of them, and more often teased Dylan then Josh. She began to tease Dylan and Alexis joined in, just kidding around. "Dylan Shut up!" Leah screamed after he made a remark to her. Alexis laughed and across the aisle was laughter too. While Leah and Dylan picked on each other, Josh and Alexis talked. Just as friends and nothing more, Josh still had a crush on her. She was tall and thin. With brown hair that could be argued as black, and brown eyes that changed shades in the light. He thought she was beautiful but knew he had no chance. He was tall and thin like her, but had light brown hair and chocolate brown eyes and braces. The more she talked the more he smiled. The smiles would dissapear because he knew she was out of his league. Little did he know, that girl in the aisle across from him was falling hard for him. "Would you ever date one of us?" she asked, gesturing to Leah and back to her. His eyes grew big and he looked at Dylan. With a slightly shaking voice he said "Yaah , probably." Dylan and Leah looked at each other almost bewildered by the conversation. "Which one?" Leah asked with a sense of curiosity. The boy looked at the two of them and didn't respond. "Which one?" the other asked. Josh looked up and smiled at her "You." "Me?" she asked. "Yah." Dylan knew of Josh's crush and chuckled. The other girl cut in, "Then date her." Josh looked at her and then to Alexis. "Which one of us would you date?" is all he asked. Alexis grew red in the cheeks and leaned back into her seat. Leah leaned her head on Alexis's shoulder and whispered, "I dare you too, Date him." She was young and naive and said "Josh" to answer his question. Leah told Josh to ask her out. The group was only five minutes away from home when Alexis responded yes. After that day, the two were joined at the hip. It started off as a bet but she really began to like him. Josh would call her every night. They would talk for two hours straight and not have an akward silence once. He learned about her and she learned about him. On May 30th, he met her dad. However he was only introduced as a friend. He was okay with that though. The more time he spent with her, the more the feeling would grow. Even though he lost some friends because of her, he didn't care. "You really don't care?" she asked one day on the phone. "No, You are worth it." Her stomach dropped and she felt a sense of butterflies from that day on. They fought rarely and would break up for a day. He couldn't be without her and she couldn't be without him. She knew what they had would end. He started middle school across town and she was to attend the other in the fall. Even though it bugged her, she couldn't help but be happy. Soon it was June and they were only left with another two weeks. Those two weeks slimed to one quickly. They couldn't hide their feelings at school. Especially at the school picnic. Which was nothing but a fun day filled with activities, like bounce houses and water balloon fights. The last activity was all dancing. A DJ and fun. Being it was fifth grade and some wouldn't see each other until high school, they signed shirts. She signed his with a star as an A , and a heart as the dot to the i. He signed hers close to the bottom, because so many people had already inked their names. Alexis made a fool of herself in front of him. Dancing the macarena in front of him with friends, he couldn't help but smile at her. School let out at 3:30, but that day most kids left with their parents at 3. The sun shined and everyone had a great day. Alexis walked home and by five, Josh called her and told her to look outside. There he stood and waved. The two went out to the patio that was in the backyard. Her sister came out but left when she got the idea. Josh treated her sister like she was his. When her sister left, she opened her arms and Josh hugged her. Her arms were around his neck and his were near her waist. He held her for as long as he could. Alexis knew, she was young. Maybe, just maybe she was in love. It would explain the feeling when he was there with her, and why she couldn't sleep without a smile on her face. The last day approched and it was a half day. Josh was going to walk her and her sister home. He forgot his key to his bike lock inside and told her to wait. Like always though she didn't listen. She began the walk with her little sister. Even though she left, he followed her and surprised her. It was noon by the time they reached her house. The temperature was blazing hot. It was 95. So the couple jumped into the pool, fully clothed. They laughed while they splashed each other. She got out and went inside to change. So he started to dry off and talked to her sister. Alexis came out changed and Josh warmly grined at her. "Harassing Josh?" she asked kidding with her sister. "No, but he keeps trying to steal my smarties!" she complained. She giggled. "Smart Josh, hey you want to go inside? It's hot out here." He followed her to her bedroom that she shared with her little sister. She sat down on the bed and he layed back. She spotted the smartie box on the dresser and grabbed it. "Ha, see I get them but you don't." Josh sat up and grabbed a hand full. She wanted to have some fun so she started throwing them at him. He chuckled and started playing too. When they began to finish the game, she looked at him sitting on the floor and leaned in and kissed him. He turned about four shades of red, before returning to his natual color again. She loved him, and she believed he knew, the words never slipped out of her mouth once. |
