Life Sucks and Then You Die (2nd Place)

Harry the mosquito hummed as he flew along through the underbrush of the woods that he called home. He landed on a flower and began slurping up the sweet nectar. Along came Sally and landed right next to Harry.

“What’s the buzz?” Harry inquired.

“Oh, the usual. Just going out for a bite.”

“Not me. I’m a male you know. We don’t bite.”

“Well, that’s a bloody shame. I have to find a human and lay some eggs.”

“Hey, I’m no ordinary fly boy, and I wasn’t born yesterday.”

“Day before?”

“How’d you know?”

“You were part of Darla’s mess. Remember I outlive you by three weeks to one.”

“How about a date?”

“Sure. How about a week from today?”

“Ha Ha. Very funny. I’ll be dead by then. Is that your way of saying drop dead?

“Yeah. Or buzz off.”

“I do have some money.”

“What does a mosquito need with money?”

“I actually don’t know. I just heard the ladies love a guy with money.”

Sally rolled her eyes. “Really, I need to go find some breakfast.”

“But we’ve known each other for several minutes now.”

“That is a long time.”

“So, how about it? You want to fly away together and make beautiful larvae?”

“I don’t know. I’ll need help with all those offspring. Will you pull your own weight?”

“A hundredth of an ounce? Sure.”

“If we break up will I get larvae support?”

“I’m only alive for a week!”

“No thanks. I think I’ll find someone else longer term.”

“Good luck. I heard there was a hatching yesterday.”

“Ooooh, is it near the back porch over there?”

“Yeah. I think it was. Near the tires.”

“I think I’ll check that out. Good-bye you silly pupae!”

“Blood sucking parasite!”

“Your point?”

“It just sounded good.”
