A boy learsn some truths about life.
Johnny, what are you doing? You haven't moved for over an hour.”
“I was just watching the bird up there build it's nest. I wonder how it would feel to live in a nest? Would it be alright if I built a nest, too so I could have a place of my own to snuggle int?”
“Of course it would be all right. You'll have your own cocoon. That sounds like a wonderful game.”
Johnny was excited. He dug an old square box our to the cellar and started filing it with pieces of grass. It didn't look very inviting?”
“What' wrong with my cocoon, mommy? It looks uncomfortable.”
“Birds may like straw and grass in their nest but I bet you'd like scraps of material better. I have a box of old dresses in the attic. “
Johnny dug out some old dresses and tore them up for rags. He made a delightful nest for himself, climbed in and fell asleep.
When his mother called him to supper he answered, “No mommy, you have to bring my supper here. I'm supposed to stay in my cocoon.”
Johnny's mother was no longer amused. “The game is over, Johnny. Come to supper.”
Johny didn't give up easily but his hunger finally won out. “You would make a lousy mother bird.” He accused his mother. “Well, you are too big to be a baby bird. You can never go back to your beginnings and you can never climb in a cocoon and let others wait on you. It's fun to pretend but we all have to face reality.”
