on the burden of facing reality
I felt a burden
of intensifying weight
in the small of my back.

Sharp pains stabbed
up my spine
spreading through my shoulders.

For just once I was tempted to ignore it,
to take a heavy drug
or be shot with a sedative.

Reality crept in
like a tremor in the night
Jolting the senses alive.

Purification was an illusion.
For nothing was wholesome
anymore.

I heard a voice
in the brightness of day
But no one was there.

Where was the light?
Where was the truth?
