Jean Philippe left Port au prince dressing in drag
The debate between jean Philippe and Ishmael
It was a cloudy and windy day. The old Kawasaki hummed under the legs of the fake missionary man and the disguised woman riding in the back seat. The wind was blowing hard and Jean Philippe feared that the wig was going to fall. His heart was beating fast. The sun was coming out little by little and the cloudy sky began to clear slowly, when suddenly the motorcycle broke down near a police headquarter in the heart of the city of Leoganes. A farmer was passing by at that time horseback riding. When he saw Jean Philippe, he approached the strange and mannish looking woman with long hair. To get away from the police headquarter, jean Philippe asked the farmer to take him to an evangelical church that was two miles away. The motorcycle would not start and the biker decided to return to Port au prince by bus.
Jean Philippe climbed on the horse and began to talk to Daniel. The farmer was very friendly and hospitable. Jean Philippe revealed his true identity to him. Daniel was touched by his story and invited the activist to stay in Leoganes. They left the path to the church and went to the house of Daniel. There jean philippe spent two days debating with the farmer’s son named Ishmael. He was an agronomist who was totally devoted to agriculture. But he hated the military government. His resentment toward the military started since they made a coup and removed his intellectual hero Lesly Manigat from power. Ishmael commented: “we need a police force in Port Au prince whose members have professional integrity. We do not need an army of thieves and murderers who steal at night and shoot in civilian demonstrations.” Jean Philippe agreed totally with Ishmael. However, the agronomist changed the subject and said: “In order for Haiti to succeed, the Haitian people have to stay away from voodoo, which is a satanic religion.” Upon hearing that remark, jean Philippe became angry and said: “no one can remove voodoo from the heart of the Haitian people. The Americans tried to replace it with their imported religions during the American invasion of 1915. They arrested many of our priests. But they failed because this is a religion of a very long tradition. In addition, voodoo played an important role in the independence of Haiti of 1804. It was the voodoo ceremony conducted by Boukman on the night of August 14, 1793, which opened the eyes of our ancestors. Since then they began to fight for independence.” “This is an historical fact that we cannot deny, said Ishmael. But to solve the problem of Haiti, we need more than just religious faith. As the national motto “unity is strength”. Let’s unite to overthrow the tyranny because hunger has no religion.”
