Story about a girl having to decide what she wants most out of life. |
Chapter One Yasmin Turner was the most kind person anyone could ever ask to meet. She was never rude to anyone, she was never better or worse than anyone, she was never judgmental, and to top it off she was a beautiful on the outside as she was on the inside. All other girls wanted to hate her because of it, but the moment they spoke to her they couldn't. Yasmin was good at everything too! She was the head cheerleader in school, she could sing beautifully, and her acting abilities were phenomenal. She also did very well in school too, always knew how to prioritize to help maintain her straight A grade point average. The only thing that people found odd, was that she never dated, and never seemed very interested in dating anyone either. Many boys tried and failed to get even one date out of her, but she always kindly turned them down. When they asked why, she would just tell them and anyone who asked, that she never believed in love at such a young age, and she wasn't going to date anyone she didn't think she could ever love. Yasmin was now in her last month of high school and she was getting ready to go off to college at University of North Carolina: Chapel Hill. She was going to study journalism and communications. She was determined to work as a journalist in her future and hopefully become an anchorwoman for CNN. Unfortunately, her mother and father had other dreams for her. They wanted her to go to Hollywood to become a famous actress. More so her mother than her father, but her father never really objected either. * * * Yasmin was walking around with her mother in the mall, going store to store to find a dress for prom which was taking place in two weeks. Yasmin had been asked by countless boys, and the one who she agreed to go with was Nathan McUrn. Nathan would be the last person anyone would expect Yasmin to pick. He was an average looking guy who was very shy. He only had a few friends from the physics science club and chess team. Yasmin chose him because she knew she could trust him not to be like every other typical senior boy in school who only look for one thing. "How about this store? It looks like they have a good handful of prom dresses left." Mrs Turner suggested. "Yeah it looks more promising than the other five stores we've already been in that had a handful of prom dresses left." Yasmin responded sarcastically to her mother. At that same moment Yasmin spotted a beautiful copper colored dress that just stood out to her. She grabbed it and headed to the fitting room. It had beading on the sweetheart strapless bodice which draped from the top of the torso to the dropped waistline. There was also beads along the side of the corset, with modesty panels, while the bottom part of the dress had smooth flowing satin. The dress looked like it was made especially for Yasmin, it complimented her on every part of her body, from her chest to her waist to her hips. She walked out of the fitting room and showed her mother who couldn't help but tearing up and applauding her daughter for finding the right dress. "I can just see you wearing something like that to a Hollywood Movie Premier." Mrs Turner commented non-chalantly "Mother! What have I told you for the umpteenth time? I have no desire to become an actress. All I want to do is become a regular college student at a regular college and get a regular job like everyone else! I have absolutely no desire to become even the slightest bit famous through acting." "Well how about we compromise. You go spend the summer in L.A. with Aunt Jenny and try out for a couple things while you are there. If nothing happens during that time then I will drop it and you can go off to college, and I won't ever bring up acting again." "Fine! If that will make you happy and leave me alone about this once and for all I'll do it." Yasmin said and went back into the changing room to get out of the dress and back into her normal clothes. She couldn't believe her mother sometimes, she would just never stop until she got her way. Even though Yasmin was frustrated with her mother, she never got mad, because she understood that it was just her mother trying to live her past through her. They spent the rest of the time in the mall shopping for shoes and accessories before heading home. Once home Yasmin spent the rest of the evening finishing up her homework, talking on the phone with her friends, having dinner with her seven year old sister, Tracy and her parents, and then just relaxing watching television while playing chess with her father before going to bed. * * * Prom night had finally arrived and Yasmin was having a great time with her friends and Nathan, her date. They were exhausted from dancing for almost an hour straight. While Yasmin went to her seat to take a break, Nathan went to get something to drink for the two of them. Just as Yasmin sat down one of the most popular boys in school, Tyler Olive came over and sat down next to Yasmin. "Having fun, Yaz?" Tyler asked with his charming smile that any other girl would stutter over. "Oh yeah. I forgot what a workout dancing can be." Yasmin said fanning herself with her name card. "So I don't suppose you would want to dance with me do you?" "Not right now, Tyler. But thank you for asking. You should go ask Natalie, she really likes you and would love it if you danced with her." Yasmin suggested. "Okay, but it won't be the same. After all you're the one I've wanted to go with to prom since the moment we met back during our freshman year." Tyler smiled shyly as he admitted his secret to Yasmin. "You're so sweet Tyler." Was the only response Yasmin could say. She hated it when boys would admit their feelings for her, as if she would come to a realization that she too was in love with them. Sure, Yasmin had crushes here and there throughout her life, that's only natural, but she never loved anyone. Then again, she never really gave herself the chance to fall in love because she knew that once high school ended everyone would disperse and go their own way. So she never really understood why someone would risk their heart breaking when they knew it would be inevitable. Yasmin was saving her heart for someone that she knew she wouldn't meet until she was older and more mature. "Yasmin?" Tyler asked snapping Yasmin out of a daze she went into. "Sorry Tyler, I just love this song. I didn't mean to ignore you, what did you say?" "I was just wondering if you were going to be at the after prom party at Jackie's place?" "Of course! You know I can't miss one of the last high school parties! Besides I'm sleeping over at Jackie's after prom anyway so I would have to be at the party whether I liked it or not." Yasmin smiled. "Great." Tyler smiled and stood up just as Nathan was returning. "I'll see you there then." * * * Later that night, after prom had ended Nathan drove Yasmin to Jackie's home. Yasmin tried to convince Nathan to come into the party for a little while before going home, but he had no desire to stay. He didn't feel comfortable in crowds, with prom as the only exception, and he definitely didn't have any urge to drink or smoke or do anything he knew would be at the party that shouldn't be. All he wanted to do was drop Yasmin off at the party, thank her again for being his date, and go home. Yasmin didn't want to force him, so when he said no for the third time she smiled, said okay, gave him a friendly hug and kiss on the cheek and stepped out of his car. She thanked him for being such a pleasant date and told him that she would see him at school on Monday morning. Yasmin walked into an already crowded house and didn't know where to begin. She did know that she wanted to change out of her prom outfit though, as did everyone else apparently. Jackie had set up a girls changing area in the laundry room while the boy had a separate changing room. So she made her way there with her bag of clothes she brought with her. There was two other girls in the laundry room when she arrived, one of the was Natalie, her best friend. Natalie helped Yasmin out of her dress and then went back to working on herself. Yasmin changed into a simple, solid red tank top and beige jean like mini skirt. She decided to keep her pitch black hair up because there were too many bobby pins in it to be bothered with. All Yasmin wanted to do was get changed and go have a few beers. "Hey Yaz, Jackie said she wanted us to do a shot or two with her." Natalie said with a smile. "Sounds good to me. Lead the way!" Yasmin said as she opened the laundry door and ushered Natalie to go first. They walked to the kitchen where they found Jackie standing next to the beer keg handing out red plastic cups to everyone who paid her $3. Of course she refused to take money from Yasmin or Natalie, since they were her best friends since the third grade. She gave the cups to her boyfriend who was in charge of the keg itself, and went to grab three shot classes from the locked liquor cabinet. She poured the three of them a shot of tequila, and together they licked the salt, drank the shot, and then ended with biting the pieces of lime. They did this a couple two more times before Yasmin told Jackie that it was enough. She got herself a beer and went to talk to some of the other people that were at the party. Two and a half hours later, Yasmin felt very drunk and asked Jackie if she could go up to her room to lay down. Jackie said that was fine and gave Yasmin the key to her room which she locked because she wanted to make sure no one would use it during the party. Yasmin thanked Jackie, and stumbled up the stairs and found it a little hard to get the key to meet the lock to open the door, but when she finally did she pushed so hard on the door she fell on to the ground in the room. Just then a guy whom Yasmin had never seen before walked past the door and noticed Yasmin lying on the floor, "Are you okay?" He asked. Yasmin couldn't really respond, all she could do was giggle at the fact that she was still on the floor and unable to get her body to move. The handsome guy noticed Yasmin was having trouble and knelt down to her level, "Would you like me to help you to the bed?" Yasmin still couldn't talk and just nodded. So he helped her up by having her put her arm around his neck and then placing one arm around her back and the other under her knees. He lifted her with such ease and Yasmin couldn't help but smell the intoxicating cologne that he was wearing. She liked how he felt so strong and yet so gentle as he placed her on the bed. "Thank you." Was all Yasmin to say, and before she knew it happened she fell asleep. Yasmin woke up to the sun beaming on her face. She groaned in pain as if she was a vampire dying by sunlight. She turned over onto her side to try to fall back to sleep and saw the same guy who helped her sleeping next to her. She screamed as if someone was chasing her with a picked axe. He woke up with a start and fell off the side of the bed. "What happened?" He asked still surprised by Yasmin's scream. "Who are you? And what are you doing in my bed?" Yasmin said grabbing the bed sheet to cover her and feel more protected. "I'm Parker. Remember I helped you into the bed last night? I sat with you to make sure you were going to be okay and I guess I just fell asleep next to you. I'm sorry for startling you." Parker said. Yasmin could tell he was telling the truth, and she did remember him helping her to the bed. "It's okay, I guess. I'm sorry for waking you, then." Yasmin said with a slight smile. Parker got up from the floor and Yasmin noticed he wasn't wearing a shirt and she how muscular he was. No one in her class looked this good, and then she saw that he had a tattoo of a dragon's head hanging off his left shoulder. She also stared at his beautiful defined face, with a perfect jawline, gorgeous green eyes, and dirty blond shaggy hair and fell over his eyes. She felt a crush coming on and she tried her best to shake it off. "So now that we're both awake how about some breakfast?" Parker asked politely and smiled showing off his pearl white teeth. "Sure, let me just go get changed and I'll meet you downstairs." Yasmin said calmly. Parker nodded in agreement and turned to head out of the room. "I like you tattoo, by the way." Yasmin added as she noticed that Parker's dragon head had a whole body and went down his entire back. "Thank you. I like yours too." He said looking back at her and winked before turning the corner and disappearing out of sight. * * * For a whole two weeks after meeting Parker, Yasmin could not stop thinking about him. What bothered her most was that she hadn't seen him since either. No one knew who she was talking about either when she asked her friends about him. Jackie mentioned that there were several people that showed up to the party that weren't even from their school. Yasmin didn't like the feeling she had. She had promised herself never to fall for anyone until college, so why was this guy making her feel so different. Yasmin did her best to keep herself focused with the remaining week and a half that was left in school. She was so close to graduating and moving on to the next part of her life. She didn't want it all to come crumbing down because she had a crush on a beautiful stranger. Her friends did the best they could to help her stay focused, but they also helped her try to find out more about Parker by asking people from school if they knew anything. No one did, until they were just about to give up. "Are you sure you didn't make him up? I mean you did have a lot to drink that night. Maybe it was a dream." Natalie suggested as they were talking quietly in the library. "I didn't dream it! If he had just stayed ten minutes more after breakfast you would have met him yourself. He was gorgeous, Nat, and he was so sweet, not to mention a great chef. Parker has to be real! There's no way I could create an image of dragon tattoo in my head." Yasmin sighed. "Excuse me, I'm sorry to eavesdrop, but I think you're talking about my brother." A shy girl at the table next to Yasmin whispered. "What? Who are you?" Yasmin asked shocked. She had never seen this girl before, but she looked like a freshman or sophomore, so that really didn't surprise Yasmin. "I'm Nina Parker. Matts' little sister." Nina said quietly. "So Parker is his last name?" Yasmin asked wanting to know more about her dream man. "Yeah. He doesn't really like being called Matt, so he always introduces himself as Parker. So he was with you that night after prom?" Nina asked. "Well sort of. He helped me and then I guess he fell asleep next to me." Yasmin said truthfully. "I don't think Mary would like to hear that. She wondered where he went." "Who's Mary?" Yasmin questioned. "Matt's girlfriend. She's a senior like you and Matt graduated two years ago from here. He came home to go to prom with her." Nina informed. "What? I can't believe him! I'm sorry, but your brother sounds sleazy. If I had a boyfriend who came home to take me to prom and then spend the night with some other girl I would be furious." Yasmin said feeling hurt suddenly. She just proved to herself why she didn't date while in college. Yasmin excused herself and rushed out of the library feeling so embarrassed and upset. She went to the bathroom, shed a tear or two and then snapped herself out of it. She told herself to stay focused on school, graduate, and then leave Asheville once and for all. Suddenly going to Hollywood didn't seem like such a bad idea anymore... STAY TUNED FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER TO COME VERY SOON! |
