To Touch The Sun

She stands radiant with eloquence
Bathed in the magnificence of the sun
Rays intertwined through her golden locks
A beaming braid tardily becoming undone

Her arms erect towards the cosmos
Upon the tips of her toes she stretches
With each muscle that marginally tenses
Closer becomes the target she fetches

Delicate palms eagerly chase their mark
Each extension of her fingers
Vigorously attempts to graze the star
Until within those gentle palms it lingers

The others pass by and watch inquisitively
“What is it that she is doing
One would die before such an impossible task
Perhaps is it death that she is pursuing”

Such taunts but make her lips smile
Never do her sapphires attempt to glint
For in those gems is only devotion
Illumination answered by a gradual squint

For she also knows of noble Icarus
And Daedalus's invention of wax and strings
That impish grin tells the skeptics
That her goal does not require wings

Or the tales of enchanting Dido
Queen of Carthage and its shire
The heavens will not set her ablaze
Such brilliance does not form from fire

So reach beyond the stratosphere
Further then the humming moon
Past the planet of our messenger
Sustain singing your ravishing tune

Cleave through the minds of the rationalists
Breach the flares of what is inconceivable
Never doubt nor hesitate on your path
By your dedicated will all is achievable

Come at night with the disbelievers away
When the stars come play but the light is undone
Know she still grasps for her dream's cache
The woman who ventures to touch the sun
