A Super Man

I like the stories from before you became legendary best,
Before the cape and blue tights and the whole saving-the-world thing.
Before – when it was just you and me and that was enough.

You used to run to me—
Open doors – jars of pickles and jam,
You saved the cat from the bent and weeping tree.
But it’s different now,
This isn’t enough – Not when there are trains to race,
Planes to stop mid-air and lest I forget,
Those damsels in distress.

On certain days when the sun slants just so,
I see the ruins of truth in your eyes,
You’re happiest when you fly,
And I might be merely mortal…

It doesn’t take x-ray vision to see what we’ve become.

So, go on-
Speed off into the great uncertain night,
At least I can say, I knew you when.
And maybe, just maybe,
When you’re finally old and weary,
You’ll hang up the suit and think back to us.
What we had.
What we lost.
That you knew me… When.
