PROMISES

We were both young when we first met.
I was seven and you were nine.
Clear blue skies, I'd never forget;
the promise, I'm yours and you're mine.
A puppy love, not one regret.

We were both shy when we first kissed.
It was my sweet sixteen that day.
You held me, said you wouldn't play
with my heart; and you never missed,
honored your promise all the way.

We were both old enough to be
together forever, you said.
And then you got down on one knee,
took my hand, "Will you marry me?"
Speechless, I just nodded my head.

We were both young and shy when we
fell in love, all was meant to be.
We grew old, still yours and still mine.
Eighty seven and eighty nine...
Another promise, wait for me.



"Quintilla"
--One of several poems that uses a five line stanza, sometimes called a Quintet.
--Each line consisting of eight syllables, the rhyming scheme of this form could and can vary, but only two consecutive lines may have the same rhyme pattern. Four rhyme schemes are possible:
Scheme 1: ababa
Scheme 2: abbab
Scheme 3: abaab
Scheme 4: aabba

I used all four rhyme schemes, a different one per stanza!
