Bitter Mistress

Love, she is a bitter mistress
when she’s old, feeling useless
and tired.

She won’t walk away like a lady.
Reviling, spitting, boisterous
she’ll cling like poison ivy you’ll scratch
in agony feeling her sting.

Writhing in your anguish
you’ll regret you ever met her.
Gnashing your teeth you’ll
bear the scar of many others who
dipped in her pool.

On restless nights, you’ll hear her
mocking you.  Her cackling will
echo in your head for seeming
endless nights.

A lost investment impossible
to recoup.  She chalks nothing up to
experience.  It’s all or nothing because
Love, she is a bitter mistress.
