A poem based on an invitation that used Kenneth Koch's "To You" as its inspiration. |
For Us I love you as a squirrel spends his days, Frantically he searches, for acorns throughout the day, To nourish him in the coming months. He knows nature will be changing, Through the change, he must see his way through, as he connects days, With more days, that evolve into months, into years. The squirrel survives, from instinct, for this, he stores his sustenance. For this we love; for this we live and are together because it is our choice, we choose Not to live confined by a circle we have not drawn. I love you as a child Flies a kite; my feelings rise and fall, In the wind, they soar; caught on a current of air, twirling, Twirling when we are together. They twirl with vim, They twirl with vigor as though caught in a blustering breeze. Blowing through trees ablaze in ambers, oranges and reds, like we used to do. Before We were an us. To be near you, I would move my life, I would follow, The timeworn, faith-traveled path leading North. Harmoniousness togetherness, I love you, as I have known you. Always willing, my heart is as open to your requests, As in nature, the flowers of Spring, open, unfurl, bloom in their beauty. |
