Mother's Day present the spring before I deployed to Iraq.
Mama, please come hold me.
My train is here, you know it won't wait too long.
Mama, please don't you cry,
'cause if you are, then I know I can be strong.

Mama, I must go and
find new adventures, and who I really am.
Mama, don't you look scared.
Guns can take young boys and turn them into men.

Can't you hear the call?
Noble sounds of war
whisper to me in my dreams.
Driven by our wrath,
for honor in death,
where there’s nothing that’s as it seems.

Just leave a light on at home,
and no matter where I roam,
you know I'll look out for you.
You clench your fists full of fear;
mama, hold me while I'm here.
What more can I do for you?

Mama, please speak louder,
your voice overtaken by the busy train.
Mama, I can't see you.
You’re just a blur through this fogged up windowpane.

Mama, please don't give chase,
don't go running, crying through the peopled mass.
Mama, don't you worry
as I answer the call of the working class.

Just leave a light on at home,
and no matter where I roam,
I will always think of you.
Keep me always in your heart.
It doesn't matter how far
I am - we can make it through.

Mama, it hasn't been long
that I've already been gone,
but I still hear you cry out.
Tears held back, the world gets cold
without mama here to hold.
Only pain to look back now.

Can't you hear the call?
Noble sounds of war
seeming ever more real.
Worry in my heart
makes me fall apart -
Is this always how you feel?

Just leave a light on at home,
and no matter where I roam,
you know I'll look out for you.
You clench your fists full of fear;
Mama, just hold me - I'm here.
Nothing more now I can do.

Mama, please – I must go.
I have to leave, and you know it won't be long.
Mama, please don't you cry,
'cause if you are, then I know I can be strong.
