Away From Home Ep.3 (Act 3 of 3)

ACT 3

INT THE SHIP-CARGO-BAY

FURLIN is at the far end near the wall, he is bouncing a ball and catching it over and over again. He seems to be enjoying himself.

INYRI
Furlin?

FURLIN turns around to see INYRI by the door.

FURLIN
Yes?

INYRI
Did you know about Kargen?

FURLIN (confused)
Know about Kargen what?

INYRI
About him being a wanted criminal.

FURLIN
What?!

INYRI
I just heard it from Sam.

INYRI walks further into the CARGO-BAY.

FURLIN
Are you serious?

INYRI
Yeah. According to Sam they just found out a couple of minutes ago.

FURLIN
Wow, I never thought of him to be a wanted guy.

INYRI
Me neither.

FURLIN
Do you know what they’re gonna do with him?

INYRI
Not really. Sam said that Captain was gonna take care of it, but she doesn’t know what he means.

The two of them are silent for a while and FURLIN goes back to bouncing the ball. KARGEN is standing out of sight and listened to them, after a moment he walks away unnoticed.

INT THE SHIP-MEDI-BAY

ROGER walks in the room then stops and looks around, he sees that the hospital bed is empty.

ROGER
What the...?

Suddenly MALKEE hits ROGER over the head and he falls to the ground unconscious. MALKEE goes to the door and looks around outside, then goes back to ROGER and picks him up.

INT THE SHIP-COCKPIT

JOANNA is sitting with her feet up, she is staring straight ahead but not concentrating on anything. NATHAN is sitting in the co-pilot seat staring downward with a similar expression.

JOANNA
What’s gonna happen now?

NATHAN looks up to JOANNA.

NATHAN
With what?

JOANNA
With Kargen, with us?

NATHAN (snorting)
Hopefully Captain will throw Kargen out and we can keep on going.

JOANNA
Oh come on Nathan you don’t mean that.

NATHAN
I do.

TONY suddenly walks in, he looks a little worried.

TONY
Any o’ you heard from the doc?

JOANNA
No why?

TONY
Well he ain’t answering his Comms.

NATHAN stands up and he and TONY leave the COCKPIT.

INT THE SHIP-MEDI-BAY

TONY and NATHAN walk quickly into the MEDI-BAY and see that there is someone on the hospital bed and that the bed sheet is covering it. They slowly take small, hesitant steps towards the hospital bed until they are right next to it. TONY and NATHAN look at each other and TONY nods his head and they both grab the sheet and throw it off the hospital.

TONY
Shit!

They are both staring down at the unconscious ROGER. They both rush out.

INT THE SHIP- CARGO BAY

FURLIN and INYRI are still in the CARGO BAY when SAM walk in.

SAM
Hey have any of you seen Kargen?

INYRI
No why? Is something wrong?

SAM
No its just I can’t find him.

INYRI
Well-

TONY (over Comm. System)
Sam, Furlin. Can you hear me?

SAM
Yeah we can hear you.

TONY (over Comm. System)
Find a weapon quickly and be ready to use it.

FURLIN
What’s going on?

TONY (over Comm. System)
Our patient is attacking us.

SAM, FURLIN and INYRI all look at each other shocked by the news.

INYRI
Will do Cap’n.

SAM grabs a small metal pipe on top of a crate and walks out, FURLIN takes out a small pistol from his belt and he and INYRI follow her.

INT THE SHIP-HALLWAY

TONY and NATHAN are walking hurriedly through the HALLWAY, when suddenly they see KARGEN walking towards them. KARGEN stops and is about to turn around.

TONY
Kargen wait!

KARGEN stops but doesn’t turn to face them.

NATHAN
Was it you who hit the doc?

KARGEN (firmly)
No.

TONY
Where’s Malkee?

KARGEN turns his head to TONY and NATHAN.

KARGEN
I don’t know.

TONY
Then lets find him.

As soon as they are ready to move SAM, FURLIN and INYRI walk through the HALLWAY in their direction.

SAM
Hey Cap’n what’s this about?

KARGEN
Malkee is what’s wrong.

SAM
What’s that mean?

TONY
We found the doc unconscious in the Medi-Bay and Malkee is missing.

SAM
(pointing to KARGEN)
How do we know he didn’t do it?

KARGEN looks at SAM angrily, SAM stares back.

TONY
Look enough of the staring contest alright, we find Malkee and we deal with him nothing else. Is that clear?

KARGEN and SAM continue to stare at each other.

SAM
Clear.

TONY turns to KARGEN.

KARGEN
Clear.

TONY
Ok then, we’ll split into three groups, Inyri and Furlin you two go together. Sam you with Nathan and Kargen you come with me.

They all nod their heads.

INYRI
What about Joanna?

TONY
Where is she?

NATHAN
She’s still in the Cockpit.

INT THE SHIP-COCKPIT

JOANNA is sitting on her chair, her arms folded over her chest.

SOUND: LIGHT FOOTFALLS

JOANNA hears them, her eyes move in its direction.

SOUND: FOOTFALLS GETTING LOUDER

JOANNA suddenly turns round and sees MALKEE moving closer to her, being seen MALKEE runs at her angry. JOANNA pushes herself off her chair and her hands reach out for her pistol attached to her side, she grasps it but before she can get it out MALKEE is right in front of her, he tries to strike her down but she ducks down and pushes past him, running out the COCKPIT.

JOAAN
Malkee is in the Cockpit guys, HURRY UP!

TONY (over Comm. System)
We hear you Jo, get out of there but make sure he don’t leave!

JOANNA
I’ll give it a shot.

JOANNA turns round to the COCKPIT and sees that the door is closed, she runs up the door and through the small circular window she sees MALKEE sitting on her chair and flicking some switches, then grabbing the double-joystick controls and turning them sharply left. JOANNA almost falls over at the sudden change in dircetion but held onto the door and got back to her feet in no time.

INT THE SHIP-HALLWAY

TONY and the others are running down the HALLWAY and suddenly stop when THE SHIP suddenly changes direction, TONY is able to stay on his feet as he holds onto the wall, while the others all fall to the ground, but they get back to their feet after a while using either each other or the nearby wall.

NATHAN
What the hell just happened?

SAM
I think we just changed course.

TONY
How’d that happen?

NATHAN
That bastard must ’a got past Jo, and into the Cockpit.

TONY
Well then let’s get him back out of it.

SAM
What about Jo? She might ‘a got hurt.

NATHAN
If she’s hurt I’ll guy that guy.

TONY
We’ll find her then go after Malkee, she probably still around the Cockpit.

INT THE SHIP-OUTSIDE THE COCKPIT

JOANNA is trying to open the door, but it is stuck, she looks through the window again seeing MALKEE staring back at her giving her an evil smile and a wave. She gives him the finger and he laughs as he turns back around. She sighs angrily and returns to trying to open the door.

TONY
Any luck?

JOANNA jumps as she turns to TONY and the others. SAM rushes up towards her and hugs JOANNA, who takes a step back because of the force.

SAM
Thought you might ‘a been hurt.

JOANNA
No, no I’m still good.

They all gather around JOANNA and the door to the COCKPIT. KARGEN looks inside the window at MALKEE, who doesn’t look back to him.

FURLIN
What’s he doing?

KARGEN
I don’t know, but he seems to know what he’s doing.

NATHAN and TONY walk to the door and try to get it open.

SOUND: CREAKING FROM THE DOOR

JOANNA
Its working.

INT THE SHIP-INSIDE THE COCKPIT

MALKEE hers the creaking and turns around to face the door. He gets out a pistol, aims it at the door and fires.

INT THE SHIP-OUTSIDE THE COCKPIT

They all duck down and rush away from the door as they hear the gunshots. The gunshots stop after six shots, they all get off the ground and look at each other.

TONY
Anyone hurt?

FURLIN
We’re all fine over here.

NATHAN
So are we.

KARGEN, TONY and NATHAN go back to the door, TONY looks through the window again, MALKEE is looking away from them. KARGEN,TONY and NATHAN all grab hold of the door and all at once try to open the door.

SOUND: LOUDER CREAKING FROM THE DOOR

TONY
Get ready.

The others get their guns ready.

SOUND: THE CREAKING GETTING LOUDER

The door suddenly opens, MALKEE turns around ready to fire his gun but the crew aims theirs at him before he could.

NATHAN
Drop it!

After a moment of stillness MALKEE finally drops the gun and raises his hands.

INT THE SHIP-HALLWAY

TONY, NATHAN, FURLIN and KARGEN are taking MALKEE to an empty cell next to AMY’S CELL. MALKEE still has his hands raised and they all have their guns trained on him. As they stop at the cell door MALKEE suddenly elbows NATHAN and pushes FURLIN out of the way then he runs off, TONY and KARGEN shoot at him but miss and stop when they couldn’t see him anymore.

TONY
Goddamit

TONY, FURLIN and KARGEN rush after him while NATHAN slowly gets back to his feet then follows him, grimacing in pain.

INT THE SHIP-DINING AREA

SAM and INYRI are sitting at the table.

TONY (over Comm. System)
Inyri! Sam! Jo! He’s out!

INYRI
Say again.

TONY
Malkee’s out and he’s probably going back to the Cockpit!

INYRI and SAM stand up, SAM’S chair gets knocked over but they don’t notice, and they run out the DINING AREA.

INT THE SHIP-COCKPIT

JOANNA jumps from her seat and runs to the door, closes it and locks it.

INT THE SHIP-HALLWAY

MALKEE is striding along the HALLWAY, his eyes darting around everywhere.

SOUND: MULTIPLE FOOTFALLS GETTING CLOSER

MALKEE stops for a second as he hears them then continues along the HALLWAY quicker this time.

INT THE SHIP-OTHER HALLWAY

INYRI and SAM are moving slowly along the HALLWAY, stopping at every corner and checking around the place before continuing on.

SAM (whispering)
Any sign of him?

INYRI (whispering)
None so far.

INYRI suddenly stops as she sees a shadow moving ahead of them, SAM bumps into her and nearly falls.

SAM (whispering)
Why’d you stop?

INYRI points at the shadow and SAM becomes afraid.

SAM (whispering)
We’d better hide, come on hurry, hurry.

They see a ladder behind them and they go down it, INYRI first then SAM, and SAM peeks out to the HALLWAY. The shadow passes them and MALKEE passes them shortly after. SAM looks down at INYRI.

INYRI (mouthed)
Who is it?

SAM (mouthed)
Malkee.

MALKKE stops walking and looks around then stops, his eyes resting on the ladder. He slowly takes a step towards it then another. SAM could see him coming towards her and INYRI.

SAM (mouthed)
He’s coming back!

MALKEE slowly got closer and closer. SAM lowers down and out of sight as MALKEE gets up close to the ladder.

TONY
Hold it Malkee!

MALKEE looks down the HALLWAY to see TONY, NATHAN, FURLIN and KARGEN standing there each with a pistol aimed at him. SAM looks up again unnoticed by everyone else. Slowly KARGEN takes several steps forward, still aiming his gun at him. SAM keeps her eyes on MALKEE and sees him very slowly reach for a blade on his back. SAM’S eyes widen. KARGEN stops a few feet from MALKEE and MALKEE then lifts his blade-wielding hand in an attempt to strike KARGEN.

SAM (shouting)
Kargen!

SAM reaches out to MALKEE, grabs his leg and pulls it back making MALKEE fall to the ground, hitting his head on the wall, and drop the blade, which lands several feet away and slides along the floor. TONY, NATHAN and FURLIN all rush up to stand next to KARGEN. Blood start to pool around MALKEE’S head. KARGEN turns to SAM.

KARGEN
Thanks for that.

SAM nods her head. There is a few moments of silence, INYRI is looking up the ladder.

INYRI
Did we get him?

INT THE SHIP-MEDI-BAY

ROGER is sitting on the hospital bed and SAM is next to him holding a small blooded cloth to his head. ROGER winces in pain.

SAM
Oh quit your complaining.

ROGER
This hurts you know.

SAM
I know it hurts but I have to do this so you can better sooner so stop trying to get away from it.

ROGER
You wouldn’t be saying that if you were in my position.

SAM (smiling)
Then I’m so glad I’m not.

ROGER winces again and moves away from the cloth, SAM grabs him and moves him back.

INT THE SHIP-DINING AREA

KARGEN is standing at one of the windows, looking out in space thoughtfully. TONY walks in and stops when he sees KARGEN. KARGEN doesn’t turn to face TONY.

KARGEN
My possesions are packed, I’ll leave the next planet we land on.

TONY
What’re gonna do then?

KARGEN
Find a way to stay out of the radar, keep moving from place to place.

TONY
… how long d’you thinbk you’ll last?

KARGEN is silent for a moment. TONY leans on the doorway.

KARGEN
I don’t know.

TONY
You got the idea about always moving.

KARGEN
Its safer than staying in one place all the time.

TONY
Yeah… well you know, we do that.

KARGEN
Do what?

TONY
Keep moving.

KARGEN slowly turns to TONY.

KARGEN
What’re you saying?

TONY
Just that we always move, and as you said ‘its safer’.

KARGEN and TONY stare at each other for a moment before TONY leaves.

INT THE SHIP-AMY’S CELL

AMY is sitting across her bed, her head bobbing up and down in boredom.

SOUND: DOOR UNLOCKING

AMY turns to the door as it opens and TONY stands there.

AMY
What’re you doing here?

TONY
You want out or not.

AMY gets off her bed and stands, she moves to the door. TONY steps out of her way and she steps out of her cell, TONY then closes the door.
