fairy tale, children's tale, action adventure, fantasy.
It was as cold November night. Nothing out of the ordinary happened. I did the usual; I went to school in the morning and came back in the afternoon. The afternoon was full of snacking and television watching. Naturally, this is the norm for a fifth grade boy. Yea, maybe I should be doing my homework, but it will be here after a few hours of doing absolutely nothing. After television watching, my family and I sit down and discuss what happened during our wonderfully exciting days at work and school. This usually consists of my dad telling us what kind of case he was dealing with. He's a lawyer, most people don't like him, but hey some one has to do the job right. My mom is a nurse, so I get to hear a lot of medical terminology that I just don't understand nor care about.
More television is watched after dinner; then a shower and bed all to start over the next day. Sleep is the best thing that could ever happen. I remember a few years ago all I cared about was getting up early on Saturday morning to watch cartoons. But, as I got older, I realized that sleep, well, is just great. It's almost greater than playing video games...well...maybe not, but close. My nighttime ritual hasn't changed since I was eight. I read from the Spiderman comic books, while I listen to my music. Now, I read for about an hour or so before I turn off the lights. When the lights go out so do I.
I usually tuck my head under my covers because I don't like to get cold. Or, at least that's what I tell people. I am slightly scared of the dark. I don't like to admit it because my friends and peers might think that I am a freak. I've been known as the weird one for a long time, so adding a coward to my list isn't something that I want to do. Plus, it helps me fall asleep faster. It usually takes me ten minutes to fall asleep; maybe a little longer to fall into a deep sleep. This night was not out of the ordinary for my sleeping habits.
Tonight wasn't out of the ordinary in terms of my nightly ritual. I read my comic book while listing to music, turned off the lights and threw the covers over my head. I fell a sleep in a matter of minutes. A couple of hours later awoke from a deep somber to a rustling noise. I allowed my head to peek out from the covers to scan the room for something unusual. Nothing; the dresser was in its usual place. The lamp was also in its normal standing position. The closet was propped open to just a crack like always. The fairy was floating near me.
Wait. What, a fairy. I was certainly frightened. Well, surprised really. I mean, who's scared of a fairy. They're harmless little creatures who have magical powers. They're pink too; I mean who can be scared of a pink flying creature, right? My eyes weren't open all the way so I don't think it saw me looking at it. It was glowing and twinkily. It even had a wand; I had to try really hard not to laugh at this pathetic looking creature. It had finally landed on my bed by my feet. It crept slowly up to my shoulders. It tapped me. The pink creature just tapped my shoulder. And with that tap came a shriek. I tried to refrain, but I could not resist. It startled me. A few seconds later my parents came to the room.
"Son, are you alright?" my father asked with great concern.
"Yes, dad; just a nightmare, I'll be alright," I said in a calming voice.
I could tell it had settled my fathers concern. He smiled turned the light off and went back to bed. In that time I had noticed that the fairy had disappeared. Not sure where the pink pointy eared creature went. Suddenly I saw its head peek out from behind my legs. His face was wrinkled, kinda like when my mom gets mad at me and doesn't know what to say.
"Hum, you're not the hero that everyone has in mind," he said with great disappointment. While he was telling me this it was examining me. Looking me up and down. Sticking its little finger in my nose and in my ears, this was really becoming annoying. At that point I had to say something.
"Hey, what on earth are you?"
"I, sir, am your guide for the evening and your personal guide for a long journey ahead of us."
It began to fly toward my dresser to dig for clothes and whatnot.
"Um, journey, guide, sir?" Sir? This thing was no sir, it was a fairy.
"What are you and why are you digging in my underwear drawer?"
Still fishing around in there for something.
"I am Luna your guide," he said with great pleasure.
"Um, Luna? You still haven't cleared anything up yet."
"In due time young lad, in due time; now do you have something to cover your feet and a warm garment to put on. We are about to leave for a great adventure."
"Yes, and yes, but where are we going?"
"You will see. Take my hand."
As I took his hand, it began to sprinkle something on me, something like dust. Wait I have heard of something like this called fairy dust I think. Great, as if I wasn't a looser already, it had to sprinkle fairy dust on me. Splendid. We went through a warp of some kind. Fun, I think. I mean flying through the air with a pink fairy in a colored tube. Or, was this on the brink of my sanity disappearing before my very eyes. A few seconds later we had a crash landing.
"Ouch, with all of your magic powers, don't you think you could have made that landing a little bit softer. Maybe you could have had a pillow appear or something."
"Yep, you are definitely our hero."
He definitely said that with great sarcasm. Whatever, I was in a new world and trying to soak it all in.
"Quickly now, we must hurry. Our world is in great danger."
He grabbed me by the hand and we floated in the air. I could not help but look around at this strange new world. There were creatures surrounding me. These were creatures that I had only heard in fairy tales and folk stories. I never knew that they really were alive and, yea, this was just plain weird.
As we were moving, I couldn't help but notice that we were coming to a deserted spot. My first thought was: "This could not be good. We are now entering the woods." Never mind that it was the middle of the night, the woods to Luna seemed like a great place to go. While avoiding every tree branch that could have hit us, we some how managed to stumble along the way. Not the fairy really, but me; at that point he made me walk. It said that "I was draining his power." Power, huh that's what you want to call it. This pink fairy wakes me up in the middle of the night and I am draining his power. Paaaalease!
We passed a few more branches and stumbled a little more before we finally made our destination; a rock.
"Um, correct me if I am wrong here, but that looks like a rock."
"You are indeed wrong."
It said it with great sarcasm; he knew what buttons to push. He was definitely pushing my buttons right now. In fact, he started to push my buttons when he entered into my bedroom. He proceeded to lift the rock up. With that came a hole. A deep dark hole.
"I am not going down that hole. If you think I am going down that hole with a fairy you are nuts," I had to say it. I was finally so mad that I could not help but be mean.
"Well, then I am nuts," said Luna.
We began to walk down a dark corridor. It wasn't at all what I expected. The walls were actually cement and decorated with pictures of other fairies. I am assuming fairies that were of high ruling or something. Suddenly we stopped.
"Why are we stopping?"
"I have to take a deep breath before I go in. I am a bit nervous. Sorry."
To be honest, he did look like he was about to cry or pass out. I wasn't sure what to think at this point. It was a bit awkward. I stood there and waited. Finally, he turned the door knob and walked in.
The room was surprisingly big. I thought fairies have small places with really small furniture. Almost like doll house furniture. I was wrong. Of course, I had been wrong about a lot of things that night. This was nothing new. It was weird looking around though. Some one of high power must have been living there. There was a crown lying on a soft red velvet pillow. A cape just lying on, what appeared to be a royal chair.
There were also gold pieces lying around everywhere. They had just finished dinner, because their plate was still sitting on the table next to a lit fireplace. But, where was the king, or high ruler? Luna looked around as though he was confused too. He saw everything but wasn't sure what to think. I could tell that he was nervous. Something was definitely going on. What was I supposed to do; what was I supposed to do? Only time would tell, and hopefully Luna.
Suddenly there was a crash. Luna flew over really fast to see what the crash was. It was nothing to be too concerned about. His majesty was a little tipsy from some of the wine he has at dinner. He had fallen while trying to climb the latter to the top of his bookshelves. He was looking for something, but what I don't know.
"You majesty, I have brought you our hero," Luna said with great excitement.
"You have, have you?" The king said in a weary tone.
The king, had begun to look me up and down, just a Luna had earlier tonight. Up and down, he then proceeded to look around to the back; my head followed. He stopped. Looked at me again from the front this time; he was pondering something, I wasn't sure what.
"Yep," he finally said with pleasure.
"Um, sir, you majesty; what am I doing here?" I had to ask, I was so confused.
"You... didn't Luna tell you?" He turned his head in deep disappointment.
"Well, to be perfectly honest, no. Not really. I mean he said that I was here to save something, but I was half listening." Still really confused.
"I see. Well, you are indeed to here to save something. My kingdom. It is under great danger of the wicked nothing," he began to tell me as though he was telling a story.
"If it is the great nothing, then why am I here?"
"The Great Nothing, isn't really nothing. It comes in and takes what IT wants and leaves. He is taking my people and holding them captive under dangerous circumstances.
"Still not clearing anything up." He now motioned for me to come and sit down in one of his chairs. I sat. I looked around. He saw. He cleared his throat and began explaining again. He also handed me a book. The History of the Great Nothing: Defeating it is Your Guide to Survival.
I opened the book and began looking for information that would lead me to my answer. As I read the book I began to get this creepy feeling. A feeling of anger, and hurt that this thing was and had destroyed millions of homes, lives and other generations of fairies or living beings in this new land. The king had continued to explain why I was the one who could defeat him.
"For many years, man, elf, fairies, magic and anything else, tried to kill or defeat this Nothing. Everyone failed. We didn't know why. One of the Elvin folk had finally discovered what was needed to defend our lives. He said it was in this book. This book, would give us the answer. You. An innocent child, who has never seen violence, who has never hated; some one too who is a victim. Some one, who knows how to love, even though they are hated, belittled. Then and only then will our kind be able to defend our kingdom. We need you. Will you help us defend our kingdom? Please say yes. There will be great reward for you." He finally finished. He waited with great concern.
I naturally sat there dumbfounded. I didn't know what to say. I mean me, fight something. Who was I? Nothing in my opinion, but these fairies and this kingdom sure thought I was something. It was an odd feeling. Really odd; I thought for a moment. Looked the King in the eye.
"I will fight. I will do it for you and your kingdom." I couldn't help but look at the face he made. He was filled with such gratitude.
"Well then, you will need some training. Great training. You need to learn some of our languages, and some of our culture. There's a lot to learn and a short time which to do so."
And with that we were off. I would soon begin training for a great adventure. What would become of this Great Nothing? What would become of this great kingdom and the fairies and all who lived in it? I would defend it, and its honor. I would do it with great honor and respect.

The story does not end here. This is just part one. Part two will be coming shortly. I do hope that you have enjoyed what you have read thus far. I love this story and children's fairy tales, so I hope this conveys what I love. Thank you for reading it.
