Anticipating my first grandchild and teaching her to love
GRANDMOTHER IN WAITING

We wait here for the little one
So soon to be alive and well.
A daughter for my eldest son
A gift to all of us, I tell.

I look forward to future days
When I will look on her sweet face
And tell her tales I have to praise
The goodness of the human race.

There's evil too, I must admit;
No need to bring that to her ears
Until she's able to commit
Her own soul in this vale of tears.

First, teach her all that's sweet and good
We want for her only the best.
She'll know we love her, and if we could
Would shelter her from all the rest.

She'll walk and talk and bring to us
Such joy as we have never known.
She'll help us all to grow and trust
As many seeds of good are sown.

Our love will grow, and so will she;
It will expand in the heart and mind,
Granting more love than she can see
Or she could ever leave behind.

One day she will teach, as is right,
Exercising all she was taught,
Passing on the goodness and light
That cannot be stolen or bought.

It's given from a loving heart
To all who can grasp and treasure
The shining love which they'll impart
To all they meet, without measure.

So I'll sit here and wait for her
And thank You, my Good Lord above
For her sweet father and mother
To pass on Your great gift of love.
