When winter comes and snow is all around,
It casts a spell in ways quite different.
Children enjoy playing in icy ground;
For them winter is an event transient.
The young find warmth in each other’s embrace,
As they savour choicest whisky and wine.
For them winter has a beautiful face;
They truly make merry and dance and dine.
The old are the ones for whom winter brings
A cold and bitter message that is sure.
A stark truth in their mind bitterly rings:
“In old age winter is hard to endure.
You witnessed many a spring and summer.
But winter, you are just meant to suffer”.
