As I stood in this strange world, amidst the swirling white fog, I couldn’t help but wonder. The nature of the fog was nearly that of a liquid; a thick, impenetrable wall that offered no suggestion of a world beyond. I closed my eyes and lay down on the damp ground obscured by the quilt of mist that surrounded me. At first I was tense, fearing I would be stumbled upon by some unseen traveler, but as I realized I was in no danger, I relaxed and fell into a state of meditation. I could feel it expanding, contracting, coalescing into memories long forgotten, like some living being, or rather several united as one. If ever a lifetime of feelings were expressed in a single moment it was then. A thousand years have passed and still I lie here dreaming while remaining firmly rooted in reality. For it took only an instant to experience my life, but has taken this long to grasp its true beauty. I believe this is why I’m here. This is not my destination, but merely a necessary stage of my journey. Struck with a peculiar yet not unpleasant sensation, I feel warmth. It’s as if all my earthly concerns were simply melting away. It starts at my core, at the very fibre of my being, and then slowly spreads to the rest of my body. But it doesn’t stop there. The very air around me shimmers brilliantly, encompassing everything I know, until my whole world consists of blinding light. I feel as if the universe has humbled itself, allowing a mere mortal to gaze upon its beauty. Suddenly I’m overcome with perfect weightlessness, defying the very laws of gravity that limit all humanity. It is in this moment that I transcend my earthly presence, out of the fog that has taught me so much. It is in this moment that I reach infinity. For now I know that in every soul, there is infinite potential, if only given a chance. It was in that moment that I heard the voice. So beautiful was the voice of unknown source, resounding from everywhere and nowhere, I broke down into tears of pure joy. Six simple words made up for everything I had endured in my lowly existence on earth. The spoken words gave me purpose, gave me a sense of belonging I had never felt before. It made me realize there’s hope for us after all. “My son,” the voice said. “You are welcome here.” |
