Third excerpt from the diary of an old woman, Martina.
October 30, 1971

I didn’t realize how much I had missed Bobbie Mae until running into her
again. Bobbie Mae was my roommate in high school. It had been both of our first
years at a boarding school, and neither of us knew anyone there. Having her back
now was like having my family back.
Bobbie was working two jobs just to keep food on the table and Angela at
school. She was working so much; Angela was in the babysitter everyday after
school. I decided to try to lighten her load, so I offered to baby sit for her
for free.
         “No.”
“Why not? Its fine, I love having Angela around, she brightens my day so
much.”
She sighed, “I know, I just wouldn’t feel right letting you do it for
free. If you’re going to baby sit, I have to pay you,” she said, “I just
wouldn’t feel right,” she said again.
“Fine. Pay me then, $3.00 a day. That’s all I’ll accept.” The statement
was final.
Bobbie let out a huge sigh, knowing that she couldn’t fight with me and
win, so it was just pointless for her to try.
“Alright, but only on weekdays after school.”
“Good,” I nodded decisively. “Now onto more interesting matters.”
“What?” she sighed, probably wondering what I was thinking of, because I
had a smirk on my face.
“Angela’s Halloween costume,” we both grinned.
“I’m not going to tell you, you have to find out for yourself,” she said
slyly.
“Oh, come on, you can tell and I’ll act surprised when I see her.
Please…?” I asked, my infamous puppy look on my face.
“Don’t do that, you know I can’t face that,” Bobbie looked away, then
looked back at my face, then turned away again. “Oh, alright, alright, I give
up! You know I cant stand that face,” she said again when she gave in.
“Yes!” I pumped my fists in the air.
“Don’t push your luck,” she glared at me. Suddenly the glare was washed
away with a huge grin. “Ok, it’s like this…………”
