The glass is empty but is the heart?
Richard Brower stared into his empty glass he couldn't believe he just blew thirteen years of soberiety all for this empty feeling not to mention nausea.  "What was I thinking?"  The answer was clear all of life's problems seem to grow worse.  If it wasn't bad enough his wife has been having an affair for the past two years she secretly filed for divorce on his birthday that was the icing on the cake compared to finding out his mother had been hiding her terminal cancer for months now.  How was he supposed to cope?  He wasn't the kind of man who broke down into tears easily nor did he want to reach out to anybody.  So instead he reached for the bottle.

The glass still remained empty but a refill was just an arm's reach away.  Would he do it?  Why not?  He just blew thirteen years worth of AA meetings and encouragement from friends and family.  That's when guilt hit him he remembered after he had been sober for a year they threw him a party everyone actually came even the people he had casted aside they all welcomed him back into their hearts.  He slammed his fist down he wasn't going to do it.

After dumping the bottle of vodka down the drain he picked up his empty glass and put it away.  He turned on the radio a soft country song was playing "Is my heart half full or half empty..." he thought "How true" he had his share of emptiness right now but he wasn't going throw his life away and crawl back into a bottle of vodka.  Everytime he thought about taking a drink he get his glass out and just sit it in front of him and just stare at it until the urge to get drunk passed.  A new day had emerged from his tragedies and he found fulfillment but it all started with an empty glass.
