this song has been sung through chidhoods, despite loss and sorrow

A CHRISTMAS POEM (2007)

“From now on our troubles will be out of sight”,
That’s what the song says,
and has been sung through our childhoods;
despite the distance between our family,
me in Oklahoma, Mom in Iowa,
you in California,
we still heard that song.

Despite winter’s blast of ice,
snow frozen roof to roof,
California seemed dreams away.
Childhood, 18 years old,
Alone, lonely in college;
Mom alone in Wichita, Des Moines,
And places in-between.

“Friends gather near to us……….”
through troubles, worries,
our days of sorrow;
losing Bud and Harry or
friends we knew before.
Still we sang the song.

“Through the years we all will be together
if the fates allow……….hang a shining
star upon the highest bow.”
We are together, memories carry us:
The boys seeing Santa, parties,
presents deep, covering entire rooms.

“So…. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas Now”
Loss, triumph, merriment, tears,
yet the song goes on.
Love is eternal,
Family is tradition, generation
after generation, scrapbooks
dated, Christmas years notarized,
lines, surprises, songs we sang.

“Here we are as in olden days
happy golden days of yore,
faithful friends who were dear to us
gather near to us, once more.
Through the years
We all will be together,
If the fates allow,
Hang a shining star
Upon the highest bow…..
And Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas Now…………..”
