my first poem about New York City
Mind Field

Eyes wide
I cried my head out all night
When I realized I’m not going to be all right
Because the standards I set up are too high

Now here I stand
Beer in hand
Blisters on my feet
I knew I was getting older
When real life wanted to do lunch

I lost my simplicity
On my move to New York City
Left my heart on a broken street corner
Somewhere down in Georgia

History keeps fooling with me
When I should be doing fine
Perhaps it’s because I’ll go through anything
To go around my mind

But the world always fails me
And memories hurt
I need help from a healer
Or a reliable drug dealer

My past is an open pain plain
I walk through on tiptoe
Memories unstable
Any minute could blow
But I figure
If each step is a potential trigger
It might be more fun
To give up
And run
