Written in my youth, to explain friendship to myself.
                                              Friendship

A sun ray did warm my hand and yet
I could not touch it,
A gust of wind did blow my clothes and
yet I could not catch it,
Elusive wisps evade my grasp but
make their presence felt,
and formless being, take on the shape
which to them is dealt,
like capricious woman desirous of
ornament,
changing their shape from moment to
moment.

Such a wisp is friendship,
In friendship I see the waves, that
break upon the sand,
they stroke its cheek, and smooth its hair,
as if with friendly hand.
The pebbles that are borne away and
others brought anew
the face of sand that is dressed afresh
with a love that seems so true.

I see the moon - pale and serene who
knows to give as well as take,
If she kept all the sun gave her, a black
night 't would serve to make.
I see the stars that give merrily as tho'
they know
the light that's sent will remain altho'
they come and go.

I see the earth, rich and brown, that
nurtures the tender seed,
and the many flowers that bear colourful
proof of its kindly deed.
They say friendship is a lovely goal,
how true its hard to say
but the fun lies in the give and take
thats accomplished on the way!
