This poem is about the Virginia Tech incident... It is not a personal experience.
Walking the halls,
Listening for a clue,
The ring of your locker slamming shut
Or the soft thud of your shoes, echoing all around.
I sit and I wait, watching for you,
In the brightest place I know.
This hall smells of sweet flowers,
Always reminding me of you.
Using the strength I know I need to have
I fight the tears that threaten to fill my eyes.
I see your smile, so bright against the pain,
The blood running down your shirt,
Staining the ground on a day of fear.
You lie awake smiling up at me,
I scream and cry for you stay here, with me.
The boy with the gun quickly left the room,
To terrorize more friends like you.
I remember the fear in your eyes as you looked at me,
Telling me everything would be okay,
Smiling as you died on the cold floor of the classroom.
I know you are gone and yet I wait,
Needing to hear your footsteps or
The ring of your locker slamming shut,
Instead, I hear the cries of those all around when they realize
Just how many are gone.
While I watch for you in this bright hallway,
Wishing I could see your smile,
I sit here wondering what will happen next.
