A schoolgirl gets what she deserves
This was written in response to a prompt, but I can't remember now what it was, except that it had to be 500 words or less. The following more or less happened to me, when I was at school, and thinking about the ex-girlfriend's face still makes me grin!

Abbie blushed, squirming as her friends questioned her about Callum.

“It’s nothing. Why would he be interested in me – he could have any girl he wanted. He’s not going to choose me, is he? And besides, he’s in the In-Crowd and I’m not. Guys like him don’t go out with girls like me,” she said, gesturing at herself.

“Don’t be so sure! We’ve seen the way he looks at you, haven’t we girls?” said Claire, pulling a ‘gooey’ face; “and we’ve certainly seen the way you look at him,” added Sarah, puckering her lips.

The others laughed and Abbie felt her face grow even redder.

“He doesn’t look at me any ‘way’, we’re just friends. He’s got a girlfriend. He’s going out with the most desirable girl in the school. Get real!” she said, trying to avoid her friends’ gazes.

“She’s horrible, though. Maybe he got tired of putting up with her personality for the sake of her looks!” offered Jen, screwing up her nose. She’d had more than one run-in with Callum’s girlfriend, Lisa, and didn’t think much of her.

“Besides, they’re going through a ‘rocky spell’ at the moment,” said Sarah. “Maybe it’s because of you?” she added, raising her eyebrows.

“And if he doesn’t fancy you, then how come he spends so much time around you? He’s always in here, ‘dropping things off’ or ‘asking about your brother’. Do you actually believe that?” said Claire, giggling.

“He is friends with my brother. Look, it’s just wishful thinking, and I’ve done enough of that. I’ve got to face it. He’s not going to be interested in me,” murmured Abbie, frowning. “There’s too many other girls to choose from.”

“Hey fatso how’s things?” said a voice from behind. Abbie tried to ignore her, but she could already feel tears welling in her eyes.

“Leave her alone, bitch. She’s not fat, and at least she’s nice!” shouted Claire from the bottom of the stairs.

“Don’t Claire. Just leave it,” whispered Abbie to herself, hurrying up the stairs.

“Awww, at least you’re nice! I wish I was nice. Then I could be fat too.” Abbie cringed, wishing the floor would swallow her. “Are you sure you can make it up those stairs okay? You don’t need a crane to help you? Look at you – is it any wonder you don’t have a boyfriend?” Abbie could feel her face getting hot, and the tears fighting to escape from her eyes.

“It’s a wonder you do,” said a voice from the top of the stairs, breaking into Lisa’s tirade. “In fact, you don’t. I’ve finally woken up to you and I’ve found someone I’d rather be with,” said Callum, offering his hand to Abbie. “Will you go out with me?” he asked, holding her against him.

The strangled noise from the bottom of the stairs told her that Lisa wasn’t happy, but for once Abbie didn’t care.

“Of course,” she whispered, finally smiling.
