A Superboy Jamie Story
The Secret of the Myst – Part 3

They reached the McCloud's front yard and found that Robby was outside, tossing a baseball up in the air. He turned to greet the guys as they approached him.

“Hey, Jamie” said Robby with a smile.

“Hey there, baseball boy!” Jamie answered merrily.

“Who you got with ya?” Rob asked Jamie.

“Well you remember Greg from class, right?” asked Jamie.

“Yeah, hi Greg!” he replied as he extended his hand for a cordial handshake.

“And these are my brothers, Wesley and Madison.” Jamie continued.

Robby nodded to them and took their hands in a warm handshake as well. He invited them to sit down on his lawn so they could all talk and get to know one other.

All five boys sat there and talked for about an hour. They talked about baseball, skateboarding, video games, comic books. You name it, they talked about it.

“Man we really do have a lot in common Robby,” said Jamie enthusiastically.

“Seems like we do Jamie, seems like we do.” replied Robby with an honestly warm smile.

Presently, Mrs. McCloud peered out the door and called Robby to dinner. Robby trotted up to her and, in sotto voce, asked if his new friends could stay for dinner.

“Baby, it’s ok with me, as long as their parents say it’s ok. We’re having a pot roast and there’s plenty,” said Mrs. McCloud.

With that Robby turned and asked his friends if they wanted to stay for supper. They all looked at each other and agreed. Wes and Greg both pulled out cell phones to call their parents for permission.

“Mom, hey it’s Wes, Can Jamie, Maddie and I have dinner with our new neighbors?” asked Wes. “Yes Ma’am we’ll be home shortly after dinner to do chores and homework… Yes Ma’am… Thanks Mom,” said Wes as he folded his flip phone closed.

“Hey, mom. I’m invited to have dinner with a new kid at school, ok?” asked Greg. “Yes mom, his parents invited us… Yes mom… Yes mom… I will Mom… See you after dinner,” said Greg with a slightly sheepish look.

“Parents...” he chuckled.

At dinner the boys got better acquainted. Jamie learned that he had more in common with this young man that he’d first thought.

“You like Spider-Man comics too?” asked Jamie, wide eyed.

“Sure do. He is my favorite comic book star,” replied Robby.

The boys continued their animated conversations as they ate. Robby had not known what to expect in the time leading up to his family’s move from Boston to Metropolis. Would it be good? Would it be bad? What would the kids be like at his new school? He was so happy to be off to such a good start. These guys were so friendly and open and accepting. By the end of the meal it seemed to Robby as if he’d known these boys all his life. He thought back to his friends he’d grown up with and been close to in Boston. Even the kids on his baseball team were no closer friends than these Metropolis kids and some of them he’d known nearly all his life! These guys all just made him feel so special and it wasn’t anything forced or put on. It was just totally natural, like they really did want to be his friend. He felt likewise about them. In his heart and mind, Robby resolved then and there to be the best friend to these guys that he could possibly be.

After dinner, the Kent boys and Greg stood thanked Robby’s mom for supper. They explained to Mrs. McCloud that they hated to “eat and run,” but they had to get home and do chores and homework. She looked at her own son and gave a nod. Rob escorted them to the door.

As they reached the front door, Jamie draped his muscular arm over his new-found buddy’s shoulder.

“Hey man thanks for having us over. We are gonna be good friends.” He said with a warm embrace.

“Yeah, Jamie! You guys are welcome here any time. I am really glad I met you guys. There is something really special about you all,” replied Robby.

“Alright, baseball boy, we’ll see you tomorrow.” Jamie said as he gave Robby a little nudge. “You want to walk to school with us tomorrow?” he asked.

“Sure do. That’d be great!” Robby exclaimed as his face lit up.

“See ya then, man” added Wes.

They all gave each other high fives, but Jamie turned around and gave Robby a friendly handshake that led to another hug. They boys turned to leave. Robby gently closed the door behind them.

He stood there for a minute and thought about how cool it was to make four new friends at his new school in one day. He decided, “Yeah, things are gonna work out just great here in Metropolis.”
