To a young woman whose eyes have repeatedly drawn my attention in Lit class.
Don't look at me like that;
I know what your stare can do to me.
Do you?
I love your hair the way I see it.
Do you?

I love the mouth, those lips.
I love the smile it gives.
I love the softness of that smile,
And those looks,
Even the voice that comes from that mouth,
And the voice, I love it too,
And the things you say
In your soft, small way.

I love them all, but

Do I love you?

I am what I am,
A part of Nature, a part of man.
I have a wild side, that's true
But I keep it closely cropped

And I don't plan to reveal it to you
Nor you to her,
The one I vowed my life to,
The one like whom there is no other,
The one from whom
Your looks, your hair, your mouth can't steal
The love that I feel
Which never ends.

Though it may wear thin, in places,
It goes on growing
Like the trees in fall.
Sometimes I think I want it all.
Sometimes I think I want you,
But a part of me knows
That that could never be my life,
Because, deep inside, I've always known
That only one could be my wife.
