"Naomi, can you keep a secret?" Karin was sitting there, twirling her mocha colored hair in a mischievous way as she smirked at me. She got up off the bed and cupped her hand around my ear as she gently whispered," I stole Mr. Jacobs' car. Don' t tell anyone, though, because you would miss me if I ended up getting expelled." I looked at her unbelievably and wished I didn't know. Karin had been hanging out with a new crowd that was more daring than us. She was hanging with the supposedly "cool" kids and would loiter around the campus, smoking with them. I wish that maybe she would learn her lesson, but she didn't. The crowd started dealing drugs and she ended up getting caught in it. She was no longer the Karin that would ask me to lend her a brush after gym or a mirror to see if she had lipstick on her teeth. Instead, it was "ya got any smokes?" and "can ya tell I was smoking?" I don't want anything to do with the mess that she caused. "No, I won't tell anybody, Karin." She sat back down and grabbed a cigarette from her pack as she smiled at me and giggled in a most devilish way. "He's gonna freak when he sees it in my driveway!" She lit it and threw the lighter in her bottom drawer, where she hid everything from her parents. She said that her parents thought that Mr. Jacobs' car was her boyfriend's and that she was only borrowing it for the weekend. "Ya wanna bring it to the junkyard?" She swiped the cigarette from her mouth and blew smoke through her nose. "No, I don't. I don't want to be part of this!" I simply slammed the door as I walked out and glanced at her in a shameful way. "Where's the old Karin that everybody liked?" I zipped up my jacket and pulled my hood over my face so that noone could see the look of conviction upon my face. I know that we live in a poor neighborhood in Munich, but that was no excuse for Karin to be acting that way. I then decided not to talk to her until she fixed her ways and it was going to be hard for her since her family can't afford rehab and she's a strong girl anyways, so she'll make it through. At least I hope. Karin came knocking on my window around midnight, suprisingly sober and drug-free. She sounded like she was crying and when I let her in, she had a pouting lip protruding from her profile. I smiled softly and turned on my lamp to see. I handed her a notepad and she looked at me in curiosity. "What am I supposed to do with this?" She flipped through the pages, expecting to find some secret letter or code. "Whenever you feel like doing something immoral, just write a poem explaining how good it feels to not be doing it." "I'll try my best just for you Naomi. And from now on, I'll tell Nicolai my secrets and I promise they won't be as bad as the previous ones." She climbed out the window and reluctantly waved goodbye. I learned the next day that she was moving to America and that Nicolai was her friend that liived there. They had been talking about her going there and that things would get better for her. I was very happy to hear that she wanted to save herself and with this my very short tale has come to an end. I shall assure you that my story...and Karin's had a very satisfying and fulfilling ending. This part of my story will end with Karin whispering in Nicolai's ear and him having a stunned face as she walked down the road in my neighborhood in Munich when she returned and how warm I felt inside to see her again. |
