Between the Squirrel and the Tree Said the tree to the squirrel as it was scampering about “You know I think your indebted me.” The squirrel turned its head up, perplexed, “And why, my good fellow is that?” Replied the tree to the squirrel, “Everyday I allow you to survive. You live in my branches and eat The nuts off of me.” Said the squirrel, “So?” “I’m merely saying,” the tree replied, “That you need to respect me more.” “My friend, I’m afraid, you’ve got it all wrong,” Replied the squirrel to the tree, “For this is a fact of life.” “But still,” said the tree to the squirrel, “How would you like it if I was the squirrel and you were the tree?” “My dear tree, it would make no difference to me.” Replied the squirrel to the tree The tree looked at the squirrel perplexed “And why, my dear squirrel, is that? “What, tree, gives you life?” Asked the squirrel of the tree “The Earth,” answered the tree “The Earth doesn’t want any respect,” Said the squirrel to the tree, “It enjoys life for life’s sake And takes pride in what it creates” “But…” interrupted the tree Continued the squirrel, “The Earth Gives you everything and Asks for nothing in return.” “But it’s just the Earth,” the tree said Said the squirrel, “And you’re just a tree.” |
