Sometimes referred to as the "feel-good Highland drama", Monarch of the Glen is the highly acclaimed television series produced by BBC and Ecosse Films, created and written by Michael Chaplin, and inspired by the novels of Compton MacKenzie. It's 7 seasons and 63 episodes aired in Britain between 2000 and 2005. It still attracts a small but loyal fan following, as is evidenced by at least 3 fan message boards that continue to be active in spite of the discontinuation of the show.
Monarch of the Glen takes place in the Scottish Highlands and the show was filmed on location amid the picturesque scenery. It is about the aristocratic MacDonald family that lives in a castle on a 42,000 acre estate. The patriarch of the family and Laird of Glenbogle, the somewhat anachronistic Hector, has been running the estate into the ground and the family is facing eviction. His wife, Molly, only a little more practical than her husband, has the sense to call home their only surviving son, Archie, to save them from disaster. Archie reluctantly returns to find to find that the estate has been deeded to him, and he is now the Monarch of the Glen.
I've attempted to make the stories understandable to readers not familiar with the show.
