“G’day Mandy! I assume you want coffee?” the obese yet tall woman called from the couch. She spent most of the time there, either watching their 54 channels of pay TV or messing around with her cross stitch. “Nah, ill go tea today Kirsten. Where are those brats of yours?” Mandy asked as she stepped inside the dim lit house, glad to get out of the Perth heat. She herself was rather overweight, but no where near as large in width or height as Kirsten. “Probably out the back as usual. God know why, its fucking hot out there..” Kirsten heaved herself out of the couch and waddled past Mandy and her kids down the hallway, her shoulders almost touching the walls and her head close to the roof. Mandy followed along behind, Clare and Chris pushing each other in attempt to get past their mum and outside first. “How’s that new project of yours going? Sarah reckons you won’t finish it’. Mandy laughed. Sarah was one of their fellow cross stitches. She had three kids, two girls and a boy. All the women in the cross stitch group had their husbands in the navy, and Sarah’s husband was always away. “Nah, I reckon ill finish it in time” Kirsten answered. She sat herself down at the kitchen table, pulling out a new magazine. “Andrew!” Kristen yelled, her voice echoing in the house. Andrew was her older son. He was taller then his mum, but as skinny as a stick. The most obvious and ugly feature on the boy was his large mole. It was almost the size of one on the newest mobile phones, covered in brown hair. The tall boy sauntered into the kitchen, and automatically put the kettle on boil and placed two cups on the bench. “Hey Mandy, tea or coffee?” He mumbled, glancing over his shoulder quickly. “Tea thanks Andrew” Andrew placed a tea bag in each cup and walked out of the kitchen and toward the games room. The other kids and settled themselves under the air conditioning, and Mandy’s eldest girl Amy sat playing one of their play station games. ‘Oh my god I suck!” Amy cried, chucking the controller toward Andrew and folding her arms in mock sadness. Andrew smiled. He knew he was the best at that game, and aced it in a few minutes. Chris poked Andrew side, eager for a turn at the game. “You suck Andrew! I could beat you any day” Chris said, punching Andrews arm. Andrew glanced at the small boy, and pounced on him. He pinned him down and began tickling his sides. “Andrew cut it out you moron! Chris has asthma, you know that” Kirsten yelled at her son. “Get the fuck off him boy and check on your sisters.” Andrew jumped to his feet, and after gently kicking Chris’s leg he wandered off towards his sister’s room. His youngest sister Alyssa had forced Clare to play with her stuffed lady bug toys. Clare and Alyssa were the same age, but Clare was little more grown up. Soft toys weren’t her idea of fun. “Cant we play with the babies Alyssa?” Clare questioned in frustration, dropping the ladybug on the floor. “No! We are playing with these!” Alyssa stormed over to where the neglected lady bug lay and picked it up. She thrusted it into Clare’s arm before throwing herself onto her bed. “Alyssa..” Clare whined, dropping the toy on the floor again and walking toward the dolls. “I'm bored of them, let’s play with the dolls.” Alyssa looked toward the door. Her brother’s large figure stood hovering in the doorway. He had watched the two girls for awhile. Alyssa jumped off the bed and tried to close the door on her brother. “Go away Andrew!” She cried, slamming the door only to have it bounce off her brothers feet and hit her in the nose. The house filled with the screams of the young girl as she dropped to the ground in tears. Clare ran aver to her friend and tried to comfort her, while Alyssa tried to push the other girl away. Clare glanced up at Andrew and screamed at him to leave them. Kirsten did the same, telling her son to make the tea. “I asked you to check on them, not murder them” she yelled, though quickly returned to conversing with Mandy. |
