While Mary's mother is visiting her native country--the Philippines, Mount Pinatubo erupts after 600 years of inactivity. When she returns to the States, she shocks her children when she declares that she has forgiven her deceased husband for all his extra-marital affairs, and for fathering illegitimate children. The most shocking news of all is her announcement that she has forgiven those who had murdered her husband. Mary makes a trip back to the Philippines to find out what caused these drastic changes in her mother's attitude and behavior. What she discovers is a box of Pandora full of unwelcome revelations, including the truth about herself. She meets William, a vulcanologist with the U.S.G.S., during her flight to Manila. Sharing the same passion for volcanoes with William, she feels an immediate attraction toward him. To complicate matters of the heart, she reunites with Diosdado--a childhood sweetheart, and an old feeling is rekindled between them. Trapped in a damaged marriage that she has been trying to repair, Mary must decide her future in love and romance.
