Where Does My Help Come From?

My husband bought a motorcycle about 4 months before he died. Oh brother, what did I know about selling a motorcycle? I put an ad in the newspaper and prayed that I would be able to sell it for the loan balance.

One afternoon, a gentleman came to look at the bike and overheard me telling a neighbor about one of the apartments I needed to have painted so I could rent the place (at the time we had 3 buildings for a total of 12 apartments).

This man spoke up and said, "I'll paint the apartment." I asked, "For how much?" He replied, "No charge." I didn't really believe him and asked again and he said that he had some time on his hands and he would paint the apartment for free. He wasn't interested in the motorcycle, yet he was willing to paint the apartment.

While I was skeptical, I was also desperate. I didn't have the money to pay someone to paint the apartment and couldn't rent the place until it was painted. I agreed to let him do the painting. Each day, he simply went to the apartment and painted. I eventually stopped questioning why he was doing this. When he was done painting the apartment, he said that he was disappointed that I didn't offer him some water while he painted. Something I will never forget. Then he went away and I never heard from him again.

The motorcycle? Well, another man answered the newspaper ad that same week and bought the bike, paying the full remaining loan balance. He wanted to take the bike through South America and he promised to mail me a post card. About 12 months later, I received a post card from Peru...he reported that the bike was doing great!
