A short story about a little girls morning and the adventure it turns out to be. |
Asia slammed the back door as she came bouncing out of the house. With her long pigtails flying in the wind behind her, she ran across the flower-scented back yard to the castle playhouse that her father had built for her. As she walked through the door she reached down and grabbed her very best friend in the world, her yellow and black monkey, Mr. Wiggles, who she had sat in the small yellow chair by the door earlier that morning while she was in the yard with her momma helping to hang clothes on the line. "Mr. Wiggles," Asia said, as she plopped down in the pink chair at the table and sat Mr. Wiggles in the blue one right next to her, "What shall we do," she asked? Asia looked around the room and spotted a puzzle, which she grabbed and dumped out on the small table in front of her and Mr. Wiggles. Asia worked diligently putting the puzzle pieces together, but within several minutes all the puzzle pieces were in their appropriate places, the puzzle was completed. Asia pushed the puzzled aside, looked at Mr. Wiggles and said, "Now what shall we do?" Asia then stood up walked over to the bookcase, scanned through her book collection and finally selected Little Red Riding Hood. She then walked back to the table sat down, placed the book in front of her, scooted Mr. Wiggles’ chair closer and said, "I think I’ll read you a story." She opened the book and began, "Once upon a time, there was a little girl... " and that was all she could remember, she looked at Mr. Wiggles and said "Momma always reads this to us but I just can’t remember all the words." "Oh well, " she said, "I guess we can just sit here and look at the pictures." And that they did, once the last page was turned and the book was shut closed, Asia folded her hands in her lap and then asked, "So now what shall we do Mr. Wiggles?" "You want to play dress up?" She said as she snatched Mr. Wiggles up out of the chair and skipped across the room to the trunk sitting in the corner that was filled with lots of old clothes and other stuff. "I have an idea," Asia said, "We can dress for lunch and have a lunch date with momma. Won’t that be fun?" She then sat Mr. Wiggles against the wall, opened the lid on the trunk and began pulling out clothing, in search of just the right attire for her and Mr. Wiggles. "Oh! Look at this," she said holding up a blue skirt that use to belong to her momma, "and this too," as she grabbed a long sleeve green shirt with a yellow daisy on the front, from up under the pile of clothes. "I believe Mr. Wiggles that this is what I will wear," she said as she turned to sit the clothes on top of the book shelve next to the trunk. Once she had sat the clothing down she noticed her momma's old straw gardening hat with the one blue flower sitting in a flower pot and a band going around the hat of small miniature gardening tools. It must have fallen off the hook because it was now sticking out from behind the trunk. She reached and grabbed it, shook it out then plopped it on her head. With her tiny little hand she adjusted it to sit up right on the top of her head and then turned to Mr. Wiggles and said, "I do think this will go just nicely". With that said she removed the hat from her head and placed it on top of the rest of her things. Asia sat down on the floor and placed her hands under her chin, as she sat there thinking about what she might be forgetting, she knew it was something but just didn’t know what it was. As she looked around the room her little hands reached down to tie her shoe and at that moment it hit her, she needed a pair of shoes and she also needed jewelry for everything to be complete. Asia got on her knees, reached over into the trunk and again began to move and toss things aside until she found one shoe that was one of grandmas’ old house slippers with sparkly stuff all over it. "I don’t believe I want this one," Asia said tossing the shoe to the side I want shoes like momma wears when she gets all dressed up on special occasions. All of a sudden a big smile came across her face as she pulled one yellow high heel saddle from the trunk. "This is it! " She exclaimed, "these are the shoes like mommy wears. Now if only I can find the other one." She said continuing to discard this and that from the trunk in search of the missing shoe. At the very bottom of the trunk all smashed and out of shape there it was the matching shoe. She pulled the shoe from the trunk and straightens it as best she could and placed it with its match. Asia then turned and pulled out the chair in the front of her little dressing table and sat down. She began to go through her jewelry box in search of just the right jewelry to put on. She knew that she would find something because inside her jewelry box there was lots of stuff to choose from. She pulled out a pair of shell shaped clip on earrings, she held them up, took a good look at them and then decided that they just wouldn’t do. She put them aside and continued on with her search. As she continued to look she came across her silver mood ring, one of the many presents that grandma had given her. She slid the ring on her finger, examined it, turned to Mr. Wiggles and said, "I think I’ll wear this; it looks lovely on my finger." With that said she turned back around and continued moving this and that around in her jewelry box hunting for more jewelry. Asia then came across her princess necklace with the white and silver beads, the matching bracelet and even the matching earrings too."Oh look! Mr. Wiggles," She squealed, as she placed the necklace around her neck, slipped the bracelet on her tiny wrist and clipped the earrings on. "I do believe that I now have everything I need." She stood up, turned and faced Mr. Wiggles and said, "Now it’s time for us to find something wonderful for you to wear too." Asia then fell to her knees and began digging through the trunk again in search of something for Mr. Wiggles. She picked up a tee shirt that she believed belonged to her when she was just a baby, she shook her head and said, "No this is to big." So that went flying in the air, then she found the old cowboy shirt that used to be worn by Mr. Bear, but that was just to big as well, so that was tossed aside too. Asia continued to searched and searched through the trunk looking for just the right something for Mr. Wiggles, she was just about to give up when she noticed on the floor in a pile of discarded clothing there laid a blue, red and yellow striped tie, one that daddy use to wear. Asia picked the tie up and looked at it, she then turned and grabbed Mr. Wiggles up, put the tie around his neck and said, "I think this will fit you just fine; it's a little big, but it will do." When she had tightened the tie around Mr. Wiggles tiny little neck she held him back to get a good look at him and said, "I think you look quite handsome in your tie Mr. Wiggles." She then sat him back down in the chair at the table and said, "Now it's time for me to get dress and I must hurry because it will be lunch soon and we don't want to be late for our lunch date with Momma." Asia quickly slipped the skirt on over the shorts she already had on, but the skirt was to big for her and quite long. She pulled the drawstring on the skirt to tighten it up around her tiny little waist. She then put the blouse on which was way to big too, but she rolled up both sleeves and tucked her shirttail inside of the skirt to also help the skirt to stay up on her tiny waist. Asia then sat down in the pink chair at the table and slipped her tiny feet, tennis shoes and all into the yellow high heel shoes. She stood up grabbed her hat and placed it oh so carefully on her head, turned and looked into the mirror and with a big smile on her face she said, "Mr. Wiggles we are two of the best dressed people in town." "Asia," Momma called, "Lunch, it’s lunch time." Asia slowly turned and grabbed Mr. Wiggles up out of the chair and said, "We’ve finished just in time, Momma will think we are both so divine in our fine clothes." Asia slowly walked out the door, pulling at her skirt, tugging at her shirt and fixing her hat back on her head all while holding tightly on to Mr. Wiggles. As she moved slowly across the yard, she could see that Momma had set the table on the patio for lunch and as she got even closer she could see her coming out of the door carrying a tray. When Mommy looked up and seen Asia she smiled and said, "Now don’t you look nice." "But what about Mr. Wiggles?" Asia replied. "Oh forgive me Mr. Wiggles" Momma said, "The both of you look quite grand." Once Momma had unloaded all the items from the tray she pulled the chair out from under the table and helped Asia in. Once Asia was settled in her seat she reached over and pulled the chair out beside her and gently placed Mr. Wiggles in it. Momma then picked up Asia's plate and placed on it a half of sandwich, some chips and a half of pickle, she sat the plate down in front of her, picked up her glass and poured her a glass of ice-cold milk. She then placed the other half of sandwich on Mr. Wiggles' plate and when she did that Asia looked at Mr. Wiggles and back at her momma and said, "Mr. Wiggles says, that will be all thank you." With that mommy smiled, and began to fix a plate for herself. As they sat and ate their lunch momma sat up straight in her chair, wiped her mouth and asked, " Asia, what have you been doing all morning that has kept you so occupied?" Asia had just taken a sip of milk and when she sat her glass down her momma smiled took a napkin and wiped the mustache from her mouth. When mommy had finished Asia wiped her hands and looked at her and said, "Well first me and Mr. Wiggles put a puzzle together, but after few minutes I have it all put together. So I then searched through my book collection and pulled out Little Red Riding Hood to read to Mr. Wiggles, but I didn’t know a lot of the words, so we decided that we would just look at the picture instead. After we had finished looking at the pictures in the book Mr. Wiggles decided that he wanted to play dress up and I did too. I then thought it would be fun to dress up in the finest clothes and have a lunch date with you. And you know Mommy finding just the right thing to wear for our lunch date seemed to take quite a while." "And you found the right things indeed," Momma replied. "You both look divine." When they had finished eating momma wiped her mouth, then leaned closer to the table and asked, "Do you think your tummy could hold a slice of apple pie with a dab of ice cream on top?" Before she could get all of the words out of her mouth Asia’s eyes lit up and she replied, "YES! It sure can, that is my most favorite pie in the whole wide world. But none for Mr. Wiggles," She said in a whisper "I think he’s had enough." Mommy gave Asia a wink as she gathered up the empty plates and cups. As she was walking through the screen door with the dirty dishes she yelled out, "I’ll be back with our pie in two shakes of a bunny’s tail." Asia sat patiently awaiting her most favorite pie in the whole wide world and when momma came through the door she began to clap her tiny hands together in pure delight. As they sat and ate their pie Momma could see that Asia was truly enjoying her pie right down to the very last bite. Once, her plate was clean Asia rubbed her tight little tummy and said, "Momma that was so good." Mommy smiled and replied, "I’m so glad that you enjoyed it, but now I think it’s time for you and Mr. Wiggles to get ready for nap time." She went on to say, "While I’m clearing the table why don’t you go and take off your nice clothes and put them away and when you come back I’ll take you up stairs and tuck you in for your nap." With that said Asia slid down from her chair walked around and grabbed Mr. Wiggles and slowly walked back across the lawn to her playhouse. Once inside she stepped out of her high heel shoes, she then took the hat from her head and placed in on top of the book shelve because the hook was just to high for her reach. She took the tie from Mr. Wiggles neck and dropped it back into the trunk, she then began to remove her clothing and jewelry and placed them all back in the appropriate places. After every thing was picked up and neatly put away, Asia picked Mr. Wiggles up and headed back toward the house. As Momma carried Asia up the stairs to her room all she could think about was how much fun she had. Once inside her room Mommy put her down walked, over to her bed and pulled the covers back. After, Asia and Mr. Wiggles were all tucked in Momma leaned over and kissed her on the forehead and whispered softly, "Sweet dreams." But before she could stand up to leave Asia sat up in the bed, threw her arms around her neck and hugged her so tightly and said, "Momma I had the best time ever" and she kissed her momma softly on the cheek. Mommy smiled and kissed her forehead again and when she walked out the door Asia pulled Mr. Wiggles closer, smiled and drifted off to sleep. THE END |
