The S Collection Presents Power Outage Witten and Co-Written By: K.M. Smith and D.C. Evers Adam sat on his bed staring blankly into the still air. The drapes were down and even his precious stereo had been turned off. He tried concentrating his power to a red marker that sat on the edge of his dresser. It wouldn't move. His eyes squinted with strain, fists clenched as though he was ready to punch someone, yet the marker still didn't move. That was Adam's power, Telekineses. He could move things with his mind, and easily at that, only his power had failed him at six o' clock this morning. He had no idea what was wrong with him, or why his power suddenly stopped working, but he knew something was terribly wrong. Bam! A loud crash sounded from the other room. A scream followed. Bree had accidentally tumbled down the stairs and hit the wall where a large mirror rested. It had smashed to the hardwood floor after she hit the wall. The door to Adam's bedroom flew open, and before he could say a word, Bree held up her hand to prevent him from a single syllable. "Not a word." "What happened?" Bree shrugged. "I don't know. One minuite i was levitating down the stairs, and suddenly i was hurled to the ground." She explained while getting to her feet and wiping the shards of glass off her sweat pants. "Why would my power suddenly fail me?" Adam could only stare at her in shock. Her hand waved in front of his eyes and he snapped back to reality. "Where did you go just then?" "Sorry, i was thinking." "Thinking about what?" Adam began walking over to the closet to get a broom, when his hand touched the door knob, he stopped. "It's just weird is all." Then opened the door and grabbed the broom. "What's weird?" A quizzical look on her face. "My powers are down, and now your having problems as well." "What do you mean your powers are down? They were fine last night." "Yeah, i dunno." He said trying to avoid the twenty-one questions. Bree always had a knack for the third degree, and now was not the time to pester him with the rundown. Adam swept up the shards and put it into the garbage bin. The broom resting against the edge of the counter. Bree stood there waiting for an answer, but she knew she was not going to get one. On the other side of town, Skye and Collin had been waiting in line for Pearl Jam tickets. The box office had been full for days, and the only other option was to call in the local radio station and try to win them there. That was a long shot. Colin and Skye had passed to the front of the line, Collin's mind manipulation had always guaranteed an easy access to anything he wanted. Since Skye had desperately wanted to see Pearl Jam, Collin had promised her those tickets, and he was going to make sure they were going together. Four years ago Collin had developed mind manipulation when his father passed away. He was young, and when his mind tried to focus on his studies, various voices would stream through his mind. He was startled often, but eventually he managed to control the aches and pains so he could get through his study time. He lived in a large house near one of Newports beaches. It was a high class neighborhood and he couldn't wait to leave the nest. He was finally able to escape when he started his senior year in high school. His mother had urged him to go to the East Side of Providence to take care of his grandmother, but she had died only two weeks oafter his arrival. She left him her house. Skye was now his only distraction. He had met her in the school library, and knew once his eyes met her's, they were destined to be together. He never told Skye his feelings, and wanted them to remain a secret until the time was right, but he knew one day, she would be his. "Collin, i can't believe we are actually going to see Pearl Jam live!" She exclaimed. Her hands gripping his shoulders. He could have sworn a kiss on the cheek was coming. No such luck. He sighed. "Next!" A large woman in a yellow shirt yelled from the box office window. Skye and Collin approached the glass and laid out three-hundred dollars on the silver plate. The woman looked at them as though they had been smoking dope, then pushed the money back. "Sorry, Pearl Jam is sold out, but Guys and Dolls have alot of tickets." A silly grin on her face made Collin tense up with anger. The way she chewed her gum with cow lips made his fists clench as she continued to grin. Suddenly her face went to a friendly smile, and she handed collin two Pearl Jam tickets. Skye smiled wickedly and squeezed his arm discreetly. The money tucked back in his pocket. He had never really used his power to get anything he desired, but this was for Skye, his love. "Tell me what is wrong Adam. I need to know." Bree was back at the twenty-one questions again and Adam was starting to get angry. "If you don't tell me, no-one will be able to help you." Adam let out a hard breath of air. "I don't need anyone's help. I can handle this on my own." He was ready to belt her one right in the nose. The more she was on his back, the more bitter Adam became. "Just get off my back okay?" He shouted out at her before slamming the bedroom door in her face. She jumped back startled. Her thoughts emerging with even more questions. Why would he act so strangely? She thought to herself. The front door slammed shut. Skye and Collin had finally come back from there ticket venture. Giggles and playful teasing pouring out between them, exhausting really. When they reached the stairs they noticed Bree standing with folded arms on one of the steps. "What's the matter Bree?" Collin asked with a crooked smile. Bree simply stood there in shock. "Something's wrong with Adam." She had said it as though she were a talking zombie. "What do you mean something's wrong? He was fine when we left this morning." The look in Collin's eyes worried Skye, he hadn't looked like that since his grandmother died at Rhode Island Hospital. Flashback's playing through his mind as though he was reliving it all over again. Doctors running rampant through the halls, racing to get to his grandmother. Her body in those tacky blue hospital dresses, white sheets covering her from neck to toe. He stood there, watching. Watching the machines light up and beep with every pulse. But it had suddenly went dead. Flatline. His eyes staring over her body, unable to call for help. Her eyes stared up at the ceiling while nurses and doctors huddled around her like a quick time-out huddle. Shouts and various orders for medicine sprung into his mind. "I don't think i can do this." One of the doctors had been questioning himself on many precedures. "This lady is going to die, and theres nothing more to do but fake a save for that poor boy." A nurse cried out in her head. That was it. That was what made Collin snap out of his daze, only he couldn't move or talk. He simply stood there watching. "Collin? Collin!" Skye had been shaking his arm to get his attention. He jumped out of his trance. Are you with us Collin?" She asked calmly. "Yeah, yeah, i'm fine. What's wrong with Adam?" Bree filled them in on the series of events that occured during their absence, they were nervous something like this would happen. Only they hoped it would have been later than sooner. "I think we should go see Elizabeth." Bree suggested. "She may know what's going on." "I thought she was in Athens." Said Skye in a wonderous tone. "There's no way we can reach her." "We need to handle this on our own. For once let's be independent and not rely on Lizzie for help." Collin always hated going to Elizabeth. She could read his thoughts and always managed to get him alone for some enlightenment. Elizabeth was their guide. She was the one who molded them into their powers, and cared for them like a parent when there weren't any around. She had the power to read minds, and see the future, but she had not sensed such a drastic change in their powers. Later that night Collin sat on his bed thinking of why he had let that horrible night surface back. His memories were beginning to come back quickly everytime something wrong was happening. But why? He layed down on his side, then pulled the blanket up over his head, eyes slowly closing, and soon after, drifted off to sleep. Bree had wanted nothing more than for Adam to be happy. She had hoped that his powers were not failing because of the blowout the night before. They had said some pretty harsh words to each other, and Bree even used her power to kick him. She missed when he threw her from him with his own power and sent her flying onto her bed. But tonight she sat at his door, hoping that he would soon come out. Nothing. Meanwhile, Skye paced back and forth in her own room trying to figure out if there was some way she could contact Elizabeth without collin finding out. She loved Liz like a mother, but she knew the price it cost to seek her advise. There was nothing Skye could do but wait for a miracle. She could hear Adam through the wall, shivering and rocking back and forth against the corner of the wall. He was scared and felt alone. As if no one could help him at all. ******** The next morning everyone excluding Adam, was in the kitchen eating breakfast and enjoying the bright sun. They kept their talks about Adam's power to a minimum, and decided to work on Bree as long as Adam remained hidden in his room. Skye cleared the table after the settlement while Collin went to the basement for the grimoire. The Grimoire was a book of various spells, potions, and other magical things that always got them through the hard times. Unlike other books on spells and magic, this one actually had power that made the foursome special in many ways. His footsteps were heavy down the stairs as he rushed to get the book. It sat there only a few paces in front of him, something had been blocking his thoughts all morning, and he had hoped that it wouldn't interfere with his current work. He opened the book and flipped through the pages, only to come up empty handed. He didn't see the need to bring the book upstairs to the others, considering his lesser finds. But something caught his eye. Collin came across a spell to block unwanted images. Just the thing he needed to get his mind straight. He set a candle beside the stand, lit it, and followed the incantation to the letter. Blessed now, this finer hour, Make this spell divine, Help me now, i beg of thee, To ease my frantic mind. A sudden brezze filled the room, sweeping up his loose curls. He clasped the bookstand within his hands and prepared for anything unnatural to happen. Only the breeze died down, and there was nothing but the cedar scent. As it was before. "Collin! You okay down there?" Called Skye from the kitchen. She didn't hear anything that had happened, but she was wondering why he had taken so long to get the book. He calmed her nerves by assuring her he was fine, closed the book, and headed back upstairs, Glancing back briefly into the basement. Hours later, Bree and Skye found themselves in a much better place. The sounds out on the streets had stiffened, and the only sound that could be heard was the shivering movements of Adam in his room. Bree shed a single tear from her eye as she heard him rustle about his room. The pacing was making her more and more tense. "You just need to figure out why he is acting so strange." Skye put in with a harmonious tone. Her soothing methods had a may of calming Bree down. The tone in her voice, the back rubbing. Her sniffles stifled, and Bree nodded at her comment, then went back to Adam's door. Listening to his every movement. "It's all my fault." Bree cried. She couldn't hold back her sadness any longer. Then Adam's door opened. ******** Skye krept up the back stairs. The wooden floor boards creaked as she tried to sneak up them. She hated those stairs. In the hallway now, she turned right, pass the second bathroom, and found herself in front of Collin's door. Her hand raised as though she wanted to knock on it. She hessitated. But before she could change her mind and turn to go to her own room, Collin swung the door open and leaned against the beam with a dashing devilish grin on his face. "I thought you'd never come." His handsome grin touching the hidden tingles in her body. She smirked. "How did you....." She shook off her question. "Nevermind." A giggle. Collin held the door wider to let her in, and soon behind a closed door they were standing face to face. "Collin, i just wanted to thank you. For taking me to the box office." She was fumbling. Her pacing became quite noticable. "I hate going downtown so early in the morning." She let out a soft smile. She tried hard to keep her thoughts and feelings about Collin hidden. He could after all read her mind, and that was something she most certainly did not want to happen. If he even knew how much she loved him, it might be the end of their relationship. He smiled back at her. "No problem." He turned and walked over to his nightstand. The lamp glew an ominous color of purple, and it made his eyes light up a sparkeling shade of blue. She loved that. But he turned it off. The overhead light was all the light he needed in order to keep his mind focused. He turned to her. "Collin, I..." He cut her off. A slow and soft Shhhh came out of his mouth, his index finger placed to his lips She stared at him quizzically. Stunned. Excited. "You don't need to say anything. I know all about it." "About what?" She played it dumb. "You and me. I already know." His face was serious. He looked her straight in the eyes and studied her face as though there was a hidden picture within her form. He was trying to break through the wall in her mind. "Collin stop. I know what your trying to do and it's not going to work." She turned away and let out a deep breath. She knew he had found out something she was hiding, and the nervousness sprung out of her like a stolen soul. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. I just can't help it sometimes." He appologized for breaking through her mind, and she accepted it. She let him hear. His hand went to her shoulder, and she turned to face him. "I shouldn't have evaded your space, and i did." "Don't worry about it." She had thought of them kissing before many times, and she thought of it now. He knew she was, and she let him. They looked at each other for a few moments, and he leaned in to kiss her. He wanted to give her what she desired, and she needed to feel his lips on hers. His scent of vanilla wafted through the air. Her nose taking in every sensuous aroma. The closer he got to her, the weaker she felt, he loved it on her. That feeling. He was ready to kiss her. Before thier lips touched Collin woke up from one of the most sensual dream of his life. He was sweating a bit, and even his breath became heavy. It was all a dream. All of it. Before he could think the entire dream was nothing more but a dream, he heard Bree hollar in the hall. "Adam!" Bree cried out. She couldn't believe he had finally opened the door. The odor from his room was unbearable, and the eerie gloom eminating within made her cringe. The shades had been turned down, the computer, and digital clock had been unplugged, and she could see the sweat cascading down Adam's forehead, yet his room had felt like the air conditioner had been turned on all day. Her hand reached out to cup his cheek, but he pulled away, not wanting her to touch him in such a condition. He shut the door behind her and pulled her close to him. He hugged her tight and was afraid to let go. What had gotten into Adam to make him act this way? Bree was clueless and it frightened her. To Be Continued |
