THIS POEM IS BASED ON A TRUE EVENT. ACTUALLY A LOT OF TRUE EVENTS. I PARK MY CAR WAY OUT THERE, AND IT'S BEEN HOT LATELY, SO IT ALWAYS SEEMS LIKE IT TAKES FOREVER. I HAVE YET TO ACTUALLY LOSE MY CAR, THOUGH.
Just a few steps more,
And I'll be there.
Instead of here,
Or maybe there.
Been here for what seems like weeks,
Trapped in this arid wasteland.
Don't know how much longer I'll make it,
I can barely stand.
Temperature's above one-hundred,
Or so it seems.
Could not have imagined this,
In my worst dreams.
Finally I decide,
To go back from whence I came.
Maybe that's quicker,
Or maybe the same.
I trudge over the hot, black ground,
Looking for salvation.
Finally I see it,
That alien nation.
I run through the doorway,
Into the cool air.
Call triple-A from the payphone,
Seeking help there.
"It's me again. I'm at the Walmart on 5th Street. Can't find that damn car anywhere."
