A mix between a short story and poem
The Darkness

I couldn’t see below my feet. The darkness was coming in and I was fighting from being swallowed by it. I struggled as it climbed up my body, I could feel my body becoming numb from it. The darkness had climbed up to my neck. I could no longer breath I had been consumed by the darkness. I tried to fight it but it was too strong. I lied there motionless, breathless, and numb from the darkness. Then somebody walked by and saw me there. They helped me up and told me that as long as there was little bit of light somewhere the darkness can be stopped. I had broken free because of these words; the darkness would not overcome me. Then I turned to thank the person but they had disappeared, I didn’t know who he was but he saved me. When I walked my steps would clear away any shadow and I could see the ground that so few could see. I had nowhere to go so I just ran towards nothing. I thought if I get there then I will know that I am there. I didn’t stop very often; if I saw someone lying there I would help them and tell them what the person told me. Some people would come with me for awhile but they knew where they were going. They all had people to see and a place to go. I was just in search of where I was supposed to go but I didn’t know where I was going. I once stopped to help someone lying there, I gave them the words and they were free but when they were free they just left without a word. I was surprised because I was used to being praised for saving them and I wasn’t used to them just leaving. I was satisfied enough with helping them but I still wanted the appreciation like most people would but I realized I can’t have it from everyone that I save. I stopped at a town not far from the last place I stopped. The town was in ruins, I walked in and saw no happy faces, all I saw were looks of hate and disgust towards everyone especially me. I came to a house covered in vines and almost destroyed. I entered and saw a family praying at a table. They had been there since the darkness took over and couldn’t leave because the darkness would consume them like the rest of the town. The whole town had been consumed for so long that if they were pulled out they wouldn’t survive without it. I had to get the family out of there because the darkness would inevitably consume the house. I told myself over and over the words which were told to me. Then I took the family out of the town the best I could. The father had brought a candle with him to fight the darkness and once we left the house the candle had went out. The darkness had almost completely consumed them once they left the house but I had gotten them away the best I could. The father and mother fought the darkness and told me to take their children out before they were fully consumed. I had taken them clear away from any danger and came back to find absolutely nothing where I was. I went back to the kids and found them surrounded by nothing and every step I took the nothing got closer to them. I couldn’t do anything but turn around and let them fight it by themselves. I yelled to them the words and turned around hoping it would work. When I turned around I saw them again and found that I couldn’t do anything but stand there. I was a danger to these children and I couldn’t go anywhere. I sat there and thought about how to get out of this conundrum. No matter what I did it wouldn’t save them but then I came to a conclusion and yelled the words once more to them and then ran towards the kids and yelled at them to fight it. Then when I had arrived where they were there was nothing there. Then I noticed there was never anything there at all. The family had never existed; the darkness was starting to consume my mind once again. I couldn’t let it happen again so I ran away from everyone and when I stopped I had realized who the person was who saved me. I knew this person so very well but knew so little about them. It was me, my inner being, which had saved me from the darkness. I would have never realized this if he didn’t come to me once more to tell me that I had saved so many people but they were not completely free because I wasn’t completely free. I didn’t understand what he was saying or what had happened and he once again disappeared. I fell asleep where I had stopped and dreamt the whole world was consumed by the darkness. I awoke in a cold sweat and I saw nothing around me. I thought to myself that the darkness was tricking my mind again. I walked toward the nothing and when I walked in I had started to fall. I was falling into nothing. It wouldn’t stop until I thought of stopping but when I thought of stopping I fell faster and faster. Then I found out where I had been going my whole life and I finally stopped falling. I had fallen into the ocean. I swam towards the bottom and the deeper I got the easier I could breathe. Then I reached the bottom and just lied there watching the sea life. Everything had looked familiar and I was happy just sitting there in the bed of coral amazed at the beauty of the sea. I had won the fight against the darkness and the nothing. I had found what I was looking for my whole life and was ready for what happened next. I was ready for death and it had come.
