I live for a flicker -
sight of a small light
in a dark world.
On a walk nearly midnight
I saw the first firefly
the second of June and I,
swift as wishing,
grabbed and caught it
in the cathedral of my hand.
Like peering into a kaleidoscope
I watched
it glow on and off,
on and off -
an eerie green-yellow beacon.
Afraid of its suffocation,
I opened my palm and
slung it to the wind.
