Cats

A fuzzy furball looks at me
as if to say "pet me".
And yet he skitters playfully
away across the bed.

A crashing sound within the night
a moaned reply "what now!"
as shadows race across the floor
and ricochet against my hip.

And yet as they grow older
my furry friends will disdain
to come within my reach
and turn their back on me.

Dignity will grow with them
and walk with them thru life.
And carry them thru old age
and the final rites of life.
