This lyric is to remind parents everywhere to count their blessings
The Shoebox

Well I took it from the closet just today
That old crayon-covered shoebox
That she made for my birthday
Then the tears fell like raindrops from my eyes
When I saw that homemade card
And I thought about that night

She said, “Happy birthday, daddy
I made this just for you
Since I couldn’t buy a present
It’s the best that I could do
Here’s your card / I worked real hard
And I hope you get your wishes
I colored this old shoebox for you
And I filled it up with kisses”

I came home from work so tired and worn that night
I yelled about the mess she’d made
There’s no excuse for such a sight
Then the tears fell like raindrops from her eyes
Then I saw that homemade card
And the shoebox by her side

She said, “Happy birthday, daddy
I made this just for you
Since I couldn’t buy a present
It’s the best that I could do
Here’s your card / I worked real hard
And I hope you get your wishes
I colored this old shoebox for you
And I filled it up with kisses”

It’s almost been a year since she’s been gone
Tomorrow is her birthday
And for her I’ll carry on
I’ll celebrate my little angel’s life
When I sit down with that old shoebox
With the homemade card inside

I’ll say, “Happy birthday, baby
I thank the Lord for you
You’re watching over me from Heaven
Oh, you know I’ll get there too
It’s so hard to read this card
But you know I got my wishes
They’re here in this old shoebox
Baby, thank you for the kisses”
