Very well done! I enjoyed both the story of pride in it's various forms, and the witty but accessible writing that let me be there to experience it. The only part that even remotely took me out of the story was the line... "Is that a gopher in your pants or are you just happy to see me?"
While funny, I glimpsed the writer instead of the writing there, because I was left wondering who's thought this was. Again, that was the only time I lapsed out of viewpoint.
I loved the characterization! The motivations and actions of Cat, man, and gopher each lead me willingly into the silly CATastrophe you created.
If I had to pick a favorite line, I think the highway 501 line would be it.
