Brilliant! You have captured the reality of war, not the John Wayne glamour. Men clinging to the familiar, a Triple Crown race, in the midst of carnage. Likening breaking one's maiden in horseracing to the experience of tasting the fury of battle is a great metaphor. You touched on the futility of wars, their inevitability. You showed that the human spirit can survive , but with damage ( the old soldier in the bar).

You hit upon the tragedy that the generation that opposes war will send its sons and now daughters to fight again.

The men have each other. You made that crystal clear. At that level of survival, that is all they have.

One little quibble? I don't think Congressional Medals of Honor are awarded as quickly as in the story. I could be wrong.

Thanks for keeping me thoroughly engrossed.

This story was yucky!

No, no, I don't mean it isn't great; it is. I felt the roach swarm myself, your descriptions were so vivid. I've been around the block and still felt shivery. Thanks for giving me the creeps. Nice ending with the old man suckering the con man.

Thanks for a well written story.

Review of The Blooper  Open in new Window.

Very well written. Through the entire story the reader tries to figure out how the announcer misspeaks "Kubeczka." The red herring of the old folks' visit amplifies the anticipation. The more pedestrian blooper is a nice twist. I enjoyed the characterizations, which were vivid. Thanks for a great story.
