I like the pace of the writing. There are a few things that keep me from getting fully immersed in the story, however:. 1) Keeping in mind the fact this is only a small portion of the story, I find it hard to accept that this takes place 1,000 years in the future. It feels like it is not very far into the future. While some of the technology described sounds advanced, some seems pretty primitive. This might just be my mind having been poisoned by so much sci-fi though. 2) The interactions between characters feel kind of cliche, like something you might expect from a Vin Diesel movie. It can be entertaining, but I think that stripping away some of that cliche feeling may reveal characters that go from 2D to 3D. I liked the metaphor about the rain cleansing the main character literally and figuratively. I do want to find out what happens next, but I hop that the characters become more three dimensional as the story progresses. Make them complex individuals that can be related to by the reader.
