1973 one of my best friends (both Juniors in HS) was driving his Volkswagen Karmann Ghia , on his way home from a great night with friends. He chose a route he'd driven down a thousand times - a two-lane stretch of US HWY - traveling at approx 50ish miles per hour...... this particular night, in horror, he watched a man, who appeared to be hitchhiking along the side of the road - turn to face him, and proceeded to walk - face first - into the path of Tommy and his yellow Karmann Ghia.
The death of this man - intentional suicide by car accident - immediately changed Tommy - and all of us who loved him...
... I read him in your words.
... in your words I feel the pain and I feel the loss , as his friend, who watched him turn numb as he attempted, at 17, to cope with killing a man... a man who smiled as he flew over the windshield... I watched him retreat into his mind...
This story was woven so well. It captured the confusion cause by PTS, yet remained quite clear in the build of it's story line. Usually one to "figure it out" and lose interest when a story is told too transparently - this piece captivated me from beginning to end.
Thanks...
