Firstly, I decided to review this even before the points award notice LOL
This to me seems a very clean, well-crafted histographic essay. It moves from memory into the present, where it's easy to visualize this great-grandfather sitting in his "plastic crap" chair, or wheelchair?, looking over his photographs of the gatherings at the pier he'd collected over the years.
The subject's voice as he complains about his furniture endears him, especially through the truly laugh-provoking quip "wannabe dresser". So, it is especially heart-warming to see that the tradition he holds so dear is upheld as well by his grandson, and that the pictures come in twice a year, even though the subject is too elderly to go himself, any more. By the final comment, the image of the great- grandfather has been completed, and definitely leaves the reader with a smile and a nod of recognition.
I think the essay would have been ruined with an overly sentimental ending, but the author avoids that, and instead, with reserve and humor, ties together the ramble of the story from the first photograph to the present with a fluid cohesion.
Overall, I was glad to have read this work, genuinely enjoyed it, and found the clean, coherent style totally refreshing.
