I enjoyed the different take on the classic cowboy trope in this poem. I can sense the weariness of the main character but there's still this underlying sense of pride and duty that keeps him pushing forward.
The last two stanzas in particular are illuminating. It builds the tension between world weariness and hope for a better day.
This is an interesting opening. I would like to know more about Michael who, upon first impression, can be either the protagonist or the antagonist in this case.
Why does Michael insist on being part of this case? Are Brendan and Dennis correct in their assumption that Michael inserted himself to the previous investigation two years ago due to wanting to be in the spotlight? Or does Michael have more genuine motivations?
A mystery about the characters are set up here of which I would like to see more. Good start!
